At present im using 1&1 cloud servers to power my websites but i now seem to spend more time patching and updating servers than developing the websites. Does anyone have any hosting recommendations please? The reason I went for a dedicated server initially was so I could mess about with mySQL, domains etc to my hearts content but as I say now its becoming a pain.
Jon, beforehand - what is the rationale for running your own "dedicated server" ? eg personal interest or technical necessity...
If you merely need to host a standard Wordpress site, wondering why you would not go with shared-hosting (done 50 between 2 of us on shared), where ISP manages server-side aspects, and allows devs to mostly focus on the app (and this http://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress )
Changing ISP (i.e. migrating a live site..) is a different proposition maybe shared with 1and1 would meet your needs ? can they help you migrate ?
if you go from dedicated with A to dedicated with B - my opinion is "life wont change much" for you.

Looks an interesting operation but the brummie bit must be the operator :-)
Not that I have anything against Brummies of course.
UWH are in Reynolds House in the Technopark. Local folk you see.
If you want a dedicated cloud service, I use www.serverlove.com from Melbourne who live next door in Turing House and also answer the phones and respond to emails. They have similar uptimes and also have other services available under www.melbourne.co.uk.
But as with everything, you are on your own to some extent because they can only hold your hand a bit for the charges either service makes. Most folk don't know their widget from their wicket and really get lost. Not MWUG members of course!
Bandwidth charges in Manchester have come down a lot and are I think competitive with London now. Whether that is policy in not having too many eggs in your London basket, progress or the influence of MediaCity, this is only good news for us.
There are a lot of advantages in having your hosting local, not the least that you can go to the offices. You hear of so many issues with 1&1 and some of the other mass hosters - one friend of mine had his domain disabled for about 2 weeks on 1&1. He lost a lot of traffic and spent ages trying to get it re-enabled - it hadn't expired or anything.

I am going to recommend none other than http://zed1.com/ for the simple reason that you'd have top WP developer looking after your hosting. Security patches very likely would be applied to your WP core even before you and I find out about them...
As a bonus you'd always have a chance to meet-up with your host at least once a month without a fail. Go and beat that all those web hosting company.

Thanks everyone for the advice, the only reason I moved from Shared to Dedicated was because I was forever getting SQL Unable to connect to database errors in my SMF Forum which was busy but not THAT busy and Fasthosts said they couldnt support the connection required on their shared platform so I went dedicated, initially with a real server then to a cloud server. The only reason I went dedicated is so I can add domains / databases etc on the fly, at the time most hosts CPanels wouldnt allow this but maybe things have moved on since then.
My issue now is my lack of Linux knowledge is causing me issues so I have the VAR partition at 98% full yet the USR partition is empty! Oh well, another day another lesson!
If my money was to go anywhere I think as you say Zed1 may well be the best place, especially as a thank you to Mike for giving up his time hosting MWUG.
