I'm currently racing my way through this book and looking forward to discussing it with everybody next week, but thought I'd share an event someone has pointed me towards as a (the) comment on my blog entry - an unveiling of a plaque commemorating the Manchester Interplanetary Society - http://astrotalkuk.org/2012/05/09/a-public-event-to-commemorate-manchesters-first-rocket-pioneers/. I'm at work so won't be able to go.

Reading the description reminded me of a very early (1938) Arthur C Clarke (who was involved in the society) short story called "How We Went To Mars" which showcases a wonderful ability to mix humour with SF. Worth a read if you can track it down (It's in the humongous The Collected Stories book).
