Hey IT folks out there,

I just dumped a live running box while it was serving web pages and dbs onto a remote box. The remote box is a spawned version of the original box.

All the DBs, services, users, configuration files copied perfectly. Here's a link to the notes I took while doing it:

Other than ESXi and Xen stuff, are there ways to remotely control the power and either serial console or USB/VGA? KVM seems to be overkill for what can typically be done via RS232, but we have one without cables so I guess that is really a moot point except for the networking side of a kvm (how does that work, vnc?). What about the power? Can we remotely boot production machines from a cold off?

Cheers,
Joe Gorse

That was a nice, well documented hack. If shutdown -r isn't enough, options are:

-wake on lan
-controlling the computers backup battery from another computer over RS232
-use a telepresence robot to push the button.
-use something like a watchdog timer in a self powered dongle set to reboot the server after losing power.

If people are interested, we can look into doing a workshop on making
biodiesel. The Dr. Pepper method is a good introduction as it lets
everyone make their own small batch start to finish
(http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=447609751&f=719605551&m=857600061).
It takes too long for an evening meeting, but would work for a
Saturday. Figure on < $15 each for supplies. More if you want your own
gloves, face mask, lab coat, etc.. The only potentially dangerous part
is mixing the methoxide and adding it to the hot oil, and the optional
sulfuric acid reduction which is required if your waste oil is in
really, really bad shape (sourced from any fast food restaurant).

I'd suggest waiting until the weather cools down a bit as the safety
gear would be uncomfortable in the current space.
