Subject: IT Hardware Inventory and Networking Diagram

http://wiki.makersalliance.org/display/MAB/IT+Hardware+Inventory

I have hit a showstopper with the setup of the Hot LAN. ClearOS, a Linux
App Server, is being used as the main router for LH and apparently their
crack networking team
failed<http://www.clearfoundation.com/component/option,com_kunena/Itemid,232...>to
test port forwarding in the Multi-WAN mode. It is completely broken.
Ironically, this configuration supposedly works without any trouble on
pfSense, which is what is on the box we were trying to get port forwarding
to.

Since we are not using any of the resource hungry apps that ClearOS seems
to be known for, I am going to consult with James to see if he would mind
getting pfSense to do the pure routing role for the LH.

In the meanwhile, if anyone happens to be an IPTables/Chains (or whatever
it is that Linux passes for a packet filter these days) expert and is
willing to help develop a custom firewall for multi-WAN, I am totally game.
The last time I did firewalls was when ipfw was the standard and we didn't
worry too much about the new fancy stuff. =)

Cheers,
Joe Gorse

Subject: Re: [makersalliance] IT Hardware Inventory and Networking Diagram

Welcome to the world of Linux, ; ) And thanks for sticking with this thing until 2am to find this obscure problem.

So I take it the following is the desired goal of the new configuration?:
-The clearOS box or it's replacement acts as a firewall and traffic divider between the 3 WAN's on one side and the LH ethernet LAN, the MA boxes LAN, and a public WIFI LAN on the other side.
-The poweredge 860 pfsense box is meant to keep the traffic on the public WIFI completely out of the MA LAN.
-The point of using 3 WAN's is to increase bandwidth as well as provide redundancy.

The LH network looks like it has the additional complication, of not
only requiring port forwarding from 3 WANS, but port forwarding from 3
WANS to 2 or 3 internal LANS-the LH, MA and Public WIFI.

I think that could be done with iptables by making a whole bunch of forwarding rules, some examples here:
http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2011/06/iptables-rules-examples/

But it sounds like pfsense is the thing to go with due to it's convenient 'gateway group' feature, and none requirement of NAT as explained below:

http://blog.martinshouse.com/2012/01/multi-wan-multi-lan-no-nat-routi...

Thanks, Joe O. I've spoken with James and he's checking out pfSense for us.

On another note, I was kind of hoping some Linux apologists would come out
of the woodwork after my trolling earlier about Linux and BSD. Aren't there
Fedora and Firefox devs on this email list willing to defend/support Linux
et IPTables? =)

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Cheers,
Joe G.

Almost any saw can cut PVC.  I use a tree trimming saw.

Good morning:

Just so I get this out of the way first: I haven't paid dues/fees nor
have I ever been to a meeting or met any of you. I am hoping to get
involved in a project or two over the next year and love hearing about
your projects on this email list! You absolutely rock.

However, is it really necessary for me to have 7 emails (in 2 hours)
about a PVC cutter in my inbox? Is there a setting we can turn on/off
so that standard replies are not going out on the whole email list?
This seems to be happening a lot and discourages me from staying
subscribed.

Again, my word isn't even worth $0.02 here because I'm just a
spectator, but thank you for your consideration. I hope everyone is
enjoying this cool weather.

Thank you for your time,
Chris

Any chop saw or cut-off saw with a carbide tipped blade will do nicely. It is important to use a good quality blade.

As to quantity of emails, I hope they increase dramatically as the group continues to gain momentum. There is no other we have yet come up with to target someone with expertise on a given subject. You will benefit from this yourself the first time you ask for help on a project, and it let's you contribute to the group as appropriate.

Perhaps you can filter these emails into a subfolder and peruse them as desired so they don't interfere with your day job?

Also, Gmail does a good job of stacking all emails with the same subject under one entry so that any number of replies does not push out other items. It is then quite easy to skip over entire threads that you do not find personally relevant. It will rise to the top with each new addition, but still only takes up one entry.

HTH

Yes it will be cool when we have as much email traffic as the Noisebridge space, I know for myself that would really help build cross discipline knowledge.

In google groups you can choose to receive a digest or no emails and read them on the web, with the 'edit memberships' setting:

https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!myforums

Our meeting announcements also go out in meetup.com emails, so one could use those also for more limited emails.

I was just talking with Chris, and it seems his setup with Thunderbird
prohibits the usual filtering methods.

This made me think that perhaps there could be yet another email client
option that alerts the user only once per email thread, and then re-alterts
you after you read the thread, and squelch the thread if archived or
deleted.

Isn't there a Mozilla dev lurking out there? Someone feel like submitting a
bug report/feature request for Thunderbird and Gmail? =)

Cheers,
