My Mosaic has suddenly stopped printing two times in the last three days.It was working, printing a 2 hours part, and suddenly it stopped.
All is connected: motor, ramps, usb....But It isn't moving.

Any idea about this strange behavior.

Thanks in advance. :(

Do you have ferrite bead on the 24v psu near RAMPS and another one on the usb cable?

What host software, what version. I have had Pronterface lock up, and I've had the arduino lock up too (requirred me to unplug usb to reset). What baud rate are you using for usb?

I've had pronterface stop communicating in windows and Mac , but I think it's got something to do with the python serial libraries in Mac and windows. Linux has never had this happen.

When it does happen I can pause and resume and then the printer starts to run again, but of course the print is usually ruined from the nozzle sitting for too long.

Yes NCBob, exactly the same story.

I'm working with Mac OS X and the last Skeinforge (50) and Pronterface.

I only have a ferrite in the 12v and other one in the 24v cable. I'm going to add a new ferrite to my USB cable tomorrow.

Thanks for the fast and great responses.

Woot, I think I may be on to something. I started to print another plate of parts and it started to slow down to the point where it would print a line of plastic, pause then start up again. I tried to pause and start the print but that didn't do anything. Then I clicked on the 'mini-mode' button and it just took off at full speed again.

My guess is that when I was doing a large plate of parts keeing up with the graphic of the print path was overloading my poor little laptop. Going into mini mode let it stop trying to update the graphic so it's much happier!!!

I'll post an update in the morning once the print is finished, but I have a really good feeling that was the issue!!!

I've had a something similar, I get pauses (blobs) in prints if I leave pronterface
open. (Updating that simulator/viewer that I can't turn off.) Mini mode fixed
that situation as well. I find sendG doesn't have the issue. Or printing from
SD Card of course.

Yup, it totally clears up the issue. Funny thing is it seems to only be happening on my Mac. In Linux or windows it doesn't do it. Might be something wonky in wxPython.

But at least I've got a workaround.

D you have a link to the program you mentioned?

Mine is an old XP laptop so it does show up under windows
as well.

Oh and sendG is a command line util for those of us with
crappy computers and no need for hoity toity "graphical"
interfaces. :-)

It's an ultimaker util but works with sprinter/marlin on RAMPS.
http://wiki.ultimaker.com/SendG

Works on Mac and Linux but only if the computer has Mono.
Which sounds bad I know. :-)

I'm pretty much a print from SD card guy from now on.

No....This is not working for me. My Mosaic suddenly stopped again. :C
I had bought and added a new USB cable with two ferrites, but the problem was not fixed.

I'm going to buy a SD shield to try with it. Where Can i find good info about using SD card? Should I change the Sprinter firmware?

Hi again!
I changed from my Mac to another laptop with Ubuntu.
I've been printing all the week without any sudden stop. I've used the same stuff that I used before: the same usb cable, the 24v power supply, kapton, pronterface, skeinforge, big parts, the same house location...

So, my problem i think, it was linked with my mac and the wx python libraries....or something like this.
I will check it again with the mac and try to discover the real problem.

However, reading about "sudden stops on internet", I've found some similar behaviour linked with marlin firmware and other OS.

Finally, I want remark the great assistance provided by Rick each time  and the high quality of my Mosaic 3D machine(M1). I love it

:)
