Dear Bot Operators,

It's my distinct pleasure to announce the (Beta) release of
ReplicatorG 0031 . In the course of making The Replicator look and
work awesome, we've retooled a good chunk of This release has all of
the standard bells and whistles, as well as a few cool features under
the hood. There may be some minor polish before The Replicator Bot
ship date, but we would proudly ship if needed.

http://code.google.com/p/replicatorg/downloads/list

If you find problems, missspelllings, or have trouble please let me
know! We want to work out bug before we announce it on the 'blog, and
before The Replicator hits peoples doorsteps.

The tip of the ChangeLog Iceberg:
* Extensive Rewrite of RepG to support The Replicator
* Post Processing of Skeinforge changes added
* Start and end gcode can now be specified from machines/*.xml
* Dualstrusion refactored, Wipes are not currently supported
* Estimator and safety checks pulled into different thread
* Improved UI for safety checker
* Machine Onboard Parameters and Toolhead Onboard Parameters merged
* New GCode for new Replicator FUNctionality! M70-M73
* Improved temperature polling
* GCode now prepended with some meta-info about machine, target, etc.

Of course, many people made this happen, but the Lion's share of
credit goes to Ted B. and David S on the release. Awesome, awesome
work folks!

If you want to try something *REALLY* cool , try turning on skeinforge
47, and setting your layer height to 0.1. Crazy detailed prints! (FYI,
Dual Extrusion on SF47 yet, that's still being tested).

hack on,

What would cause the lines to be about 2mm wide? It is the same home Z
height as v29 with SF35. I tried various settings and could not figure
it out. On the previous beta I gave up even after copying my original
working SF35 profile. It seems to be flow rate related.

What's the recommended firmware version to use with this on Gen4?

Firmware 3.1 is recommended for all bots, for users of The Replicator,
firmware 4.7 is recommended.

Are you planning to fix the bug (or annoyance, anyway) that causes preheat mode to switch off after you build to file? This behavior has not changed in this version, and it would be really nice to be able to continue preheating while preparing files to print.

It seems like this could be addressed on Replicator-G side? From an
engineering point of view, I think shutting everything down on reset
is the proper thing to do.

If a device/software controlling the bot is responsible for resetting
the bot, it seems like it should also then follow up by turning the
heater back on...

It's also pretty easy to turn on preheat from the RepG menu. I'm sure
it's just a small tweak to change the preheat temperature...

Question, You mentioned that you're starting work on accelerative firmware... will this extend to Gen 3-4? or will it be limited to the Replicator?

also, do you guys plan for it to be full look-ahead acceleration? or just accelerate then decelerate on each move?

Thanks!

Has anyone had issues when printing (re-generating gcode on same
object after adjusting settings) that it keeps adding more and more
wipes (what I call wipes, although they are disabled). It moves to the
right corner after heating up and extrudes in various speeds, then
moves back up to the Z max and then will print. What I am seeing is it
repeats that more and more and I have to keep going into the gcode and
delete the offending sections. What is the option that does that. I
just want it to extrude a quick dot then start printing. I don't like
the outline. It was doing that in v.29 and SF35. It would go to the
corner then lower all the way and extrude a small bit then turn off
the extruder as it moves to the first starting point.

Makerbot TOM w/MK7. Received in Jan #7XXX. One main issues it the
profiles that work great in SF35 don't convert over nicely to SF47 and
there are some options that are happening like the extruding at the
beginning that I don't know where that comes from. I checked the
startup.gcode and alterations and did not find that there. Wipe is
disabled. The code turns on the extruder after the temperature comes
up and extrudes at 3 different speeds for about 10 seconds. I don't
need that, just a quick squirt to get any air out from a retract. I
had about 1/4" of not print on the first line if it doesn't do that.

For Pre-heat. Thanks for the note, that is a good call. I'll add
that annoyance to the bug list!

For Acceleration support on Gen3/Gen4. We are targeting The
Replicator. We have a time-box scheduled for porting that code
backwards to Thingomatic and TOM. I fear acceleration takes enough
extra code it will not squeeze onto the older (smaller) chips, but I
could be wrong. Either way, at the end of that timebox, if we have it
backported, awesome! If we couldn't do the port within the limits of
the timebox, it will slow to a 10% or 20% time project. No matter
what, the code will live in GitHub, and you can hack on it anytime,
and all you want.

Regards, hack on,

Well... I'm still running a Cupcake (and building a Mendel with Gen3
boards that I already own)... I would personally yank off my own 644P
and replace it with a 1284P if it is merely a matter of code size.

A little Iridium solder and a little heat goes a long way.

Thanks for all the new code, now and in the near future!

I'm getting the same behavior that James was talking about. The
machine moves into position then it extrudes for about 10 seconds at
three different speeds then proceeds to start the print. I'm just
starting small with a calibration cube for now. My machine is a MK7
TOM.

Hey James.  Are other sections getting duplicated?  Or does it only seem like multiple wipes manifest after regenerating your gcode?

Also, To James and MacGyver: Can you supply us with both the skein preferences you selected and the gcode you produced so we can see whats going on?

Thanks!!

You know what would be a neat feature, having the model view highlight
the layer it is currently printing (if not from SD). Kind of like how
Pleasant3D shows you the current layer selected. I know there is the %
at the top but I am a visual person and like to look at the model and
current progress and see where it is. There would probably have to be
a comment or something added my skein forge that can be looked at as
the commands are being sent to know what layer it is on.

I think that showing the layer will cost too much processor power and
then you only can print from SD card.

Layer numbers aren't actually in the gcode unless they're comments,
you could count them, but plugins like hop and tower wouldn't play
very well with that. The better thing to do would be to send back the
z value each time it changes. That shouldn't take any more processing
or time or clog the serial buffer any more than monitoring the
temperature of a heater, and the host machine could display all of the
movements from the gcode with that z value in a number of ways.

I guess it is time to get into the firmware. I have been toying with
designing my own lcd interface with maybe some graphics so I might
need to modify the lcd code some.

Note that in Jetty's firmware, the current z-height is displayed in
the LCD display. However, going from that to maintaining a more
complex display in the LCD complete with graphics might be a challenge
(code space, microprocessor compute cycles).

By the time the commands get to the firmware to execute, all comments
are removed and all it's provided
with is a Z-Height in steps. The Jetty firmware then converts that
into mm's for you.

I toyed with the idea of converting that into a layer height, but it's
not practically doable without changes
to the information being sent or making assumptions about layer
height.

In the end I didn't make assumptions about layer height as the first
layer can be different on different users
machines depending on how they have gcode setup, some people vary the
height of layers mid print, it can be different when using a raft
and some people don't use 0.3mm height.

With all the complexity of that and the potential for confusion with
different setups, it seemed better to give the actual
height in mm, because if you know that information, it's a simple
calculation to divide by your layer height after
removing any offset at the beginning of the print.

Also, from the point of view of pausing, it's easier to think in mm's.

I was toying with the idea of a 128x128 oled display with maybe a
small micro that would emulate the current lcd. That way all you would
need to send would be a small command that could be interpreted and
displayed. The oled modules I have used have drawing primitives like
circles and even ways to send over icons. Still in the thinking about
it stage since I would like a lcd but see they are getting harder to
buy. I do electronics design / board layout and programming at work.

Ok, now that I have raftless printing ok on 0029 and SF35 I thought I
would have another shot at 0031 and SF47. Right off I am having the
same problem I have that causes me to give up.

1) After I generate GCODE and click on the gcode tab to review it all
I get are the start and end commands. The main object gcodes in-
between are not showing. They are being generated and get the python
preview of the layers (how do I turn that off?). I always select save
and close. The gcode also has the multiple start commands (at least
that is what they look like).
2) multiple seconds duplicated.
3) Is there anyway to get the standard OSX open file dialog to be
used? I don't like not being able to have more control (searching,
last folder, etc) when trying to locate a file and opening it from
within replicatorg
4) looks like the main portion is being exported to a file but now
showing in replicatorg in the gcode section although I have saved and
resaved the profile with export option disabled.

*(looks like from the log it is loading the gcode three times (bottom
of log).

Here is the gcode being created that is missing the main data, also
posting the log.
