Would it be useful to split up this group by product now?

Maybe into a Cupcake/Thingomatic group and a Replicator group? I don't
know the ease, etc. of doing this or if anyone else thinks this would
be helpful. The questions about them seem very different. It might
make specific info easier to find. Just a thought.

receive it, and when I have a Cupcake-related question I grep all the
email trying to find an answer.

My vote is NO. The TOM/Cupcake discussions offer fantastic background
info for me and my Replicator. I believe most topics seem to be
universal, and the platform specific topics still often touch on topics
that may be a concern or cover fundamentals that help improve the use of
my Replicator.

What MAY be helpful is to prefix the subject with the platform in
question when a specific platform issue comes up. i.e. subject of "TOM
- Wrong Y axis", or "Replicator - dual printing". If enough of us do
that, then the info is still available to all, but self organzing.

If a TOM specific list were started, I would not sign up for it as I
don't have a TOM. But I would miss out on a lot of knowledge too.

In short, I believe that splitting the list delays the learning curve of
newer users. But I'm just one person.

You've expressed exactly how I feel too. Coming into this as a brand new user I've really appreciated all the perspective gained by reading the discussions about all the machines, not just the one I happen to be using.

Maybe someday a split will be needed, but not yet by any means. Your subject suggestion should help people filter as needed.

The Cupcake and ThingOMatic stock hardware design will eventually fade away.  The strong standard now seems to be the Replicator and Ultimaker gantry design.  If anything, the Gen3 and Gen4 electronics will be converted over for use in a DIY Replicator or Ultimaker type machine.  I know I'm doing it after having my own Ultimaker.  Also, Jetty has made accelerated firmware for both Gen3 and Gen4.  That alone is incentive for people to keep their working Gen3 and Gen4 electronics and just apply it to an upgraded box.  Also, Jetty has created his own separate Google User Group on Jetty firmware.  That is the other unifying force among all these different electronics.

I fixed a problem with a Printrbot last night because of learning
about X/Y problems with the TOM here on this forum, and I own a
Replicator which I used to print a new X axis pulley with for the PB.
It's all good.

I'm curious to know how you like the PrintRBot? I saw it on KickStarter
- and it looked pretty cool. But, are you having to tinker a lot with
it? And, the problem with the PrintRBot - was it a problem from the
start - or were you using it for a while then you ran into the problem?
I also liked the PrintRBot because of the price. Although, I myself am
still working with my CupCake.

As someone who started with Makerbot in the beginning (batch #1) I have seen a lot of info go by on this list. While a lot of it doesn't pertain to me, info that i didn't think i needed became useful. That happened are too many times to count. Addin stepper extruders and upgrading RepG  are just two areas that were made easier by keeping up with the list. 

I would vote for keeping it all I the same group, but better subject lines would be very helpful.

Yes it's useful to learn from other people's experiences, and to keep up
with developments.

I vote NO on splitting the group.

There are lots of questions that 'cross pollinate' information that
would just be duplicated and possibly posted to several lists
concurrently.
In short, I think it would add more overhead that it would cure.

The Spacemarine_Fixed.stl model. First run was with external support
only. Failed, but not too badly. Second print was with
internal/external support. It came out much better but the extra crud
to be removed/cut off detracts from the surface finish.

Watch the thing and I'll be posting an "I made one" to it in a short bit
tonight.
