It looks like a bunch of us are seeing more slack in the plunger as
time goes on, and the parts wear. I did the same as another poster
(Luis?) and put a little bit of a bend in one the metal washers last
time I took it apart, which is working, at least for now.

Has anyone had any success with swapping in a small spring into the
MK7 extruder? I've seen the external spring loaded mods, but was
thinking removing some of the washers and replacing with a small
spring might work better.

Seems the spring would address the wear issue as well as help with
filament (although I agree with others that this would just mask
issues with bad filament).

Size/tension seems to be the biggest question...

Any thoughts?

I swapped in a small split-washer for one of the delrin washers and that has been working quite nicely.  No idea what size it is other than "small and fits" from my rather large accumulation of bits over the years.

That is essentially a small spring, good idea! I've just never spent time looking for a spring that fits. I've got some pretty deep grooves in my plunger so I thought about grinding it down and adding washers. Sounds like the grooves will return though.

Is there a bearing tiny enough to be rigged up in that tiny space. I'd like to use the mk7 as is if I could.

But I do just want to print. It only came up when I went from MBI filament ~1.8mm to some old Makegear filament that is closer to 1.7.

Can't recommend this strongly enough ... http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:15718
totally eliminated all filament drive issues for me (plus it's much
easier to change filament)

I too went with the Minimalistic Mk7 replacement after my delrin
plunger got so grooved it wouldn't feed anymore. Originally I just
turned the plunger 1/4 turn until it made an equally large groove in
that direction. I finally had to toss it. My ONLY gripe with the
Minimalistic Mk7 replacement is that sometimes it is hard to get the
filament loaded just right unless I'm looking directly down at it to
see where the gear and bearing meet. Other than that I'm pretty darn
happy with it and I've been able to print some PLA samples I received
with my order from Ultimachine.

I might try out this thing http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:17800
which is a slight variation on the Minimalistic Mk7 replacement so
that my daughter will be able to once again change the filament for
me. As it sits now I get to do all the changes.

After normal (?) use of a few months, my plunger is shot. Multiple
grooves.

I tried the spring inside the plunger, but it made it very difficult
to assemble and then feed the filament. I then tried one of the
spring extruders mentioned above, and it works like a charm.

This is clearly going to be an issue for folks, especially for all of
the replicator folks that aren't expecting to have to modify.

Has anyone gotten a new plunger from Makerbot?

Yes. Go to the makerbot store and enter "delrin" in the search
window. You should find the "Delrin plunger kit for Mk7 & Mk8",
$6.25.

I replaced the stock extruder with a very simple replacement....

After a bit of fiddling to get the compression right, it has performed
flawlessly. The big benefit is that it is easy to clean the drive
wheel without disassembling the extruder.

just for reference .. the perfect spring for the spring-loaded version
is readily available at Homely Depot as part of a spring assortment.
It's well worth it for the quick-change feature

Another Mod MakerBot user might have an interest.

It is called the Mini hyena, an improved feeder.

He is running it on Indiegogo...
