can you manually lift the platform? I'm wondering if you have some
plastic in the geared rod that is jamming the movement causing the motor
to skip. Normally when a stepper grinds away like that, the axis can't
move for some reason (i.e. trying to move the X-head past the endstop
cuz endstop isn't reading right). But that's just an idle thought - I'd
put in a support requests with MBI.

Another possibility....

If the eeprom area of the firmware gets reset / wiped, then the Z axis
maybe running in the opposite direction, which would
produce the effect you're seeing. 5.5 firmware doesn't set this value
automatically when it detects a blank eeprom.

Also, the AVR browning out could cause the eeprom to wipe (as we found
out happened on the ToM.

Connect the bot to RepG, and go to Onboard Preferences, and verify
that:

X/Y/Z and B (left extruder) are inverted

Another cause can be too high a feed rate on the Z axis, causing
skipping, which can also be related to your acceleration
settings.
