I know RepG 27 has only been out for a day, but with Skeinforge 44 with the skin module included, I was wondering if anyone has come up with a way to make it work with ABS.

The module is obviously designed for PLA, which is much less elastic than ABS and can thus tolerate much larger differences between the area of the nozzle and the cross-sectional area of the threads, which means that it can handle variations in layer height better, but I'd like to find a way to make it work.

I've tried several different layer heights and combinations of settings without any luck, but skin is a really cool feature and I'm not quite ready to write it off as PLA-only.

For me and other fearful SF users, what does skin do?

It splits the perimeter into multiple layers so that it has a finer texture. I was hoping that it would also interpolate between the layers so that you would get smoother curves but I don't think it does that. I think it just goes over the same path multiple times to get a somewhat smoother surface finish.

That’s correct. It just prints the perimeter twice at half-height.

From http://fabmetheus.crsndoo.com/wiki/index.php/Skeinforge_Skin :

Skin is a plugin to smooth the surface skin of an object by replacing the perimeter surface with a
surface printed at a fraction of the carve height. This gives the impression that the object was
carved at a much thinner height giving a high-quality finish, but still prints in a relatively short
time. The latest process has some similarities with a description at:
