Error: payload not big enough.

Has anyone been able to solve the "Error: payload not big enough"
error? This is the now the main problem I have with quality of my
prints.

Do you refer to this error concerning the unexpected halts during printing (producing the plastic blobs in the build)? If yes: there's at least one other thread in the list about this.

Downgrading to Firmware v1.1/ReplicatiorG 0005 helped a lot in my case, although the problem is still there (1-4 blobs in a 1h build still happen on my machine...).

I noticed 8 or 10 “payload not big enough” messages while I was printing an empire states building last night but I didn’t get any of the blobs that you mention.  I did however notice very small problems like stretching.  It looks like the motherboard is losing contact with the extruder so the extruder motor stops and stretches the extruded plastic rather than extruding more.  I know if you run repg with the extruder unplugged you get the same errors.

This is what I would call a workaround.  I wonder if anyone has diagnosed the cause?  Or isolated to a particular component like the FTDI chip, replicator, the serial drivers...

"Payload not big enough" messages occur when the app has sent an
interactive request to a toolhead, and the toolhead has given an
insufficient or no response.

Primarily, these messages result when the app is querying the toolhead
for its temperature. There are two reasons it could be doing this:
* You've got "monitor temperature" checked off in your preferences, or
* You've left the control panel open while you're doing your build.

It hadn't occurred to me to check on this until now, but if you are
running into these problems, make sure that the control panel is
closed while you're running your build-- the temperature queries add a
lot of blocking traffic to the connection.

I had this problem when I first started, and for me it was sufficient
to wiggle and tighten the terminals connected to the thermister.

Speaking wholly from the outside, it sounds to me like some of these cases might be caused by loose or unreliable connections between the motherboard and peripherals, such as the toolhead or the thermistor. Perhaps someone with this problem could take a look at this?
