As long as the machine is idle (not warming up or calibrating or otherwise reading data) it should be ok to hot-swap.  That's what the MB folks seem to do back at HQ!

There was actually an issue with the early Replicator electronics where SD cards would get fried if you left them plugged in while powering up the machine, so always popping them out before powering down a machine and popping them in *after* powering up may be the safest procedure anyway.
