Hi

I have a share in a Thing-O-Matic and my young boys wanted to make
things to print. CAD software is hard for 8/11 year olds to master but
they are adept at Minecraft so I made "Printcraft" a Minecraft server
than emails you .stl files of models created in game.

I have made it public for anyone to use. Just log on to Minecraft and
go to 46.38.166.50

You should post this on thingiverse!  This is a great idea!

I took it for a spin. Pretty cool. I couldn't get it to send the email.
Does it take a while to send out? I checked spam folder and what not.
The system seemed to say the correct email address. The only thing
that might be odd for your system is that I have a period in my email address.

Also, have your boys check out tinkercad. Not as nitty gritty as building
in MC but you can do some fairly fancy things and the tutorials are doable
by any age group.

That's a good idea I'll do it later

Hmm may be a bug somewhere. I do validate email addresses but periods
shouldn't upset it. The rendering it quite fast, but if the model is
very large it can take a little while to convert to stl. I'll add some
logging to try and catch errors like this.

I'll have a look at tinkercad as they are quite keen

Hey Paul,

Just a suggestion. If CAD SW is too difficult - which I can understand -
you might want to have them try and play w/Bryce 3D. Its more consumer
level - and has an almost Toysih interface. Although, not sure if it can
output STL.It does actually let you build objects using Boolean operations.

In addition - Autodesk has released a bunch of consumer level SW that is
actually FREE - including 3D modeling SW, SW for slicing 3D models, and
more. Check out:
http://labs.autodesk.com/technologies/123d/

I'm also curious to know more about this PrintCrasft. My son is a HUGE
MineCraft fan - with a version of it on his iPod Touch, the PC AND on
the xBox360. He's kinda obsessive with it. Although, I know some of his
buddies are also that way. So - this PrintCraft - is it something you
programmed? Or - does MineCraft just automatically have the ability to
generate STL's? Just curious to know what you did - since I also happen
to be a programmer by day (PC database systems) while I am a 3D guy and
Bot operator by night.

Thanks,
Kurt
