So I have a Thing-o-matic with a Mk7 and Jetty Firmware, running with the 5D driver, and a Replicator with dual Mk8.

They are using pretty much identical Skeinforge profiles, except that the ToM has Filament Packing Density at 0.85, and that even seems a bit sparse, while the Replicator is happiest with Filament Packing Density set to 0.95 - and that seems a bit thin too (infill doesn't quite connect with perimeter sometimes).

The extruders should be basically the same, right? Why would there be such a difference in settings?

I suspect part of it is that the Replicator does run at somewhat faster feed rates, but Dimension should account for this, right?

Did you remember to change the machine profile to use driver="makerbot4g"
instead of driver="makerbot4ga"?

You see a Filament Packing Density (or ABS vs, PLA choice) for the Replicator
in RepG? Are you using SF 35 for the Replicator? You might want to use SF 50
for the Replicator: it works quite well. But stick to SF 35 for the Thing-o-Matic.

No two extruders are the same. Jetty was just posting recently that he sees
about a 10% difference between the two Mk8's on the same Replicator.

It does.

Packing density is in Dimension. You must use SF 40 and above for 5D.
I concur with checking driver="makerbot4g". I just made that mistake
when switching computers. (smacks forehead)

Yeah, I'm using SF47 with the ToM, and I did change the driver. (In the control panel, the extruder shows the little jog arrows that don't otherwise appear). The ToM prints really, really well.

I'm using SF50 with the Replicator. The default settings just weren't very good, I was getting way too much plastic and blobbing.  Upping the packing density made a huge difference.

I'm just surprised that when both machines are doing well, the packing density parameter is so different. Same plastic on both machines - in some cases, even the same spool.
