Hey, fellow makers,

I would like to try using plexiglass as enclosure material, but do not want to buy it at the retail, Home Depot prices. Call it the Cheapskate Syndrome. The ~1/4 inch thick sheet of 18" x 24" runs $20 at the HD, and that strikes me as pricey. There is a guy on Craigslist in Kearney that is selling same thickness but much larger sheets of 45" x 108" for $25. That's better in comparison, but still not free or dirt-cheap. I've been dumpster diving around my work for pallets that I am reusing for wood and plywood, so I imagine that it is possible there is a business out there that may get rid of used plexiglass periodically.

If anyone has ideas I would appreciate a lot. If the guy in Kearney is my best bet, then I'll have to consider that option.

If you're looking for more pallets, I have 18 available free of charge. I live near Brookfield, MO, so you'd need to come get them. First come, first served. I don't have a line on free plexi, but if I run across any, I'll let you know.

My location is the reason I'm not more active in the make:KC group.

I don't think that's being a cheapskate, just not being a sucker. I had
a project a few years ago that required quite a bit of 1/4" steel
pieces; I priced them at Home Depot for around $250, but ended up
getting the entire order from Metal by the Foot for about $35.

I don't know the answer to your question, but craig.be...@gmail.com
might.

I have bought Plexiglass from a company called ACI Plastics that is located off Winner Road and 24 Highway. They may have scrap pieces they would be willing to sell or giveaway, but I'm not sure of this. Their phone number is 816-561-7050.

What size do you need? I know someone who buys in large sheet in bulk
for their business. I don't know if they would be willing to sell one
or if they have scraps but I can check.

http://www.kc-store-fixtures.com/a-acrylic_displays.php might be a good dive. Google around and check street view to see what type of dumpster they have if the place is out of the way

Acrylic can be a bit pricey in general. The Craigslist deal is a steal really if you don't mid a few defects and not having any masking. You can get it locally from a couple plastics suppliers but you'll need to buy a full 4'x8' sheet. The up side to that is they'll cut it to any dimensions you want for just a little bit more and you'll get it for considerably less than what any retail store would charge. Online, estreetplastics.com has OK prices and a number of different types of acrylic.

I hope the acrylic I got you works. Post a picture when you are done.
