We are having our first event for the 2012/2013 season!
This social event is a great way to meet and network with other IxDA members like you, and even catch up with everyone and find out what's new and happening in IxDA.
We will also have an open forum where you can get to know more about the field of Interaction Design and the realm of User Experience. So feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Also, if there is a topic you'd like to see on our calendar of events, make a suggestion by talking with one of our Local Leaders.
Here are the details:
*Time:* 5:30pm, Thursday, November 8, 2012 - come right after work!! *Place:* Dobra Tea, 151 Middle St., Portland, ME - in the same building as Bull Moose (free parking in the back lot after 5pm.)

Thanks again to a great turnout last night! We experienced some different foods and teas from around the world at Dobra Tea, and some interesting conversation. Remember, it's you, members of IxDA that make these events happen so do come out and stop lurking. ;)
We will have another event before the Christmas holidays so please stayed tuned.

One of the highlights of the conversation might have been the answers to "how do you name your files?" (yes, there may have been a nerd or two in attendance). We had some unique takes on naming, but there were also similarities. Basically, we name files so that it's easy to sort them in the explorer/finder.
There are some vastly different needs if you eliminate your file system completely. Although I haven't been able to move towards a "plain text" system yet, it creates different constraints and opportunities. Has anyone tried this or heard of it? Here's a nice example of how it could be done: http://bettermess.com/naming-files-and-avoiding-folders/

Might I vote we continue with events such as this. Perhaps discuss a topic. I'd love to attend more events but have not read the books. So I end up going to Boston IxDA or NHUPA events.

Hi Fred, I certainly feel your pain, having read nothing more than a single Game of Thrones book in the last year!
I am able to keep up with a few dozen RSS feeds, and normally open Instapaper with my coffee on Sunday mornings. So if there are any articles that you've found particularly compelling (or are favorites that you've written?), please share them and we can row them onto the informal agenda for our next meeting!

I'm right there with you both. I'd like to discuss IA/UX/Design topics but would not necessarily attend the book club meetings just because I so rarely have time for enjoyable reading, let alone industry books.
It sounds like book club may be a separate meeting altogether..?

One thing I noticed at tonight's NH UXPA meeting was the mention on needing board members. Does the Maine IxDA have board members? That sounds like something that is key. That way there isn't just one person doing everything. They also had a sponsor, tonight it was Raka Creative, who provided pizza and a place to meet. They had people offering jobs and people needing jobs. That would be a good thing to have on a linkedIn group page. Any other ideas?

And, yes, I do have a question: At what point in the product design process do you typically get involved?
Let me explain where this question is coming from: I've been very frustrated working as a consultant that most of my clients or prospects wanted me to salvage design and product concepts, rather than work on the overall product vision. That may be fine for some, but i found it frustrating to have so little creative vision. And this led me to almost leave the UX space entirely. But once I shifted my marketing focus away from UX, I've gotten two prospects who want to involve me right at the beginning. One presents some mind boggling design issues, which is both wonderful and scarry, but it's exactly what I wanted.
Does this question have traction in this UX community?

I definitely think this question does. And glad to hear you might make it next week!
I'll jump on the discussion here... I would say ideally I'm involved from the kick-off meeting as a consultant, and that has become more regular as the awareness in the software/website development community grows in understanding the importance of UX. I think if one was part of an in-house team doing UX, you'd be more likely to be part of the initial vision, but as an outside consultant, that opportunity pops up less frequently.
I too am occasionally brought in at the end of a product to patch-fix, but that poses some interesting opportunities, especially in UX involvement in future releases of the product/website.

I've been asked to reach out to the developers community about Startup Weekends. The creator really want developers to participate.
Startup Weekends are weekend-long events that are bring together designers, developers, marketers, managers and startup enthusiasts to share ideas, form teams, build products and launch start-ups. Participants have the option of pitching a new business idea on Friday night, then teams form around the best ideas and work all weekend to develop the business model. So far there has been almost 600 events in over 100 countries, involving 56,000 entrepreneurs, and starting thousands of new businesses.
Individual volunteers from PelotonLabs, Maine Center for Entrepreneurial Development (MCED), the Portland Public Library, Maine Center for Creativity, Greendrinks, SMCC, Blackstone Accelerates Growth, and many other companies and organizations are working together to host this first event.
