I would like to propose the topic for our next meeting:

def presentation_missing()

We should each have ~3 ideas of short presentations, lightning-talk
style. We'll write them on a board and audience can choose which ones
(if any) we want to hear.

I could offer:
* really basic overview of working with github
* map.restfully
* reactor pattern (eventmachine in Ruby)

We should also reserve time to talk about and plan for September's meeting.

Thanks!

I could briefly talk about

* rake tasks for cron as an alternative to script/runner
* activerecord error handling for associations
* STI as a way to minimize controllers in addition to database tables

How about installing Rails on Linux. Like Linux box that has
NOOooothing on it. I mean not even gcc or whatever the hell I needed
before installing gcc and readline and everything else! Woot! *bashes
head into plate*

The only problem with that one is it would depend on what system you are using! :)  Mandriva? Ubuntu? Fedora? Gentoo? All would be slightly different....with gentoo being the only one I haven't run that setup for.

The only things I've been dealing with lately is ActiveMerchant, Phusion Passenger and optimizing damn SQL queries that are still slow as molasses! (with the sql, also using the 'with_'  scoping rules and stuff)

I managed to get it installed on RHE without any real issues. Basically once you get ruby and the ruby-devel installed you are mostly good to go. Installing gcc and stuff should be tricky either. What version of RHE are you using?

Sorry for taking this to off topic. Don't worry about I got it all
installed it was just a pain is all. Seeing how I never touched an
empty linux os before.

For future reference, the following two lines are sufficient:

rpm -Uvh http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/epel/5/i386/epel-release-5-3.noarch.rpm
yum install rubygems

That would pull in everything you need. You can even use yum to install
rmagick effortlessly.

Thanks!

Nick, that sounds awesome, particularly the part about Passenger,
because that means that you are ditching Java frameworks entirely for
Ruby, right? (^_^)

So far we have:

* rake tasks for cron as an alternative to script/runner
* activerecord error handling for associations
* STI as a way to minimize controllers in addition to database tables

* active_merchant
* phusion passenger
* optimizing SQL

* really basic overview of working with github
* map.restfully
* reactor pattern (eventmachine in Ruby)

More?

Thanks!

A few last-minute entries:
* backgroundrb (asynchronous background processing)
* foreign_key_migrations plugin -- automatically adding foreign key
contraints to db
* shipping gem (calculating UPS/FedEx rates on the fly)

Fantastic! Any other last-minute topics?

If anyone wants to carpool, email me off-list. I can drive, I suppose.

Thanks!
