VA Rail at Capisic - let's lay off!
|
| |
We (me, Barry Hosmer, Margi Huber, Bob Bittenbender) did a delayed ME Audubon Birdathon visit to Capisic yesterday morning. Loads of warblers, incl Cape May, Nashville, many Blackpolls.
It may be time for all of us to lay off the poor Virginia Rail who is trying to have a normal life there. When we taped him, he came charging out of the reeds in a hormone-addled frenzy and attacked my shoes. I never saw such a pi--'d off bird, or a more confused one as he glared up at us before beating a huffy retreat. Obviously, this guy has HAD IT with us deceiving him. Time to leave him in peace??? We hung our heads in shame (and listed him shamelessly anyway).... more »

Northern Maine Birds: American Pipits, Cape May Warbler, Woodland
|
| |
Another gloomy day in the north with intermittent showers and light
southeasterlies. I was quite envious of all the talk of migrant fallouts
in the southern end of the state...nothing like that is happening, yet, up
here.
I did get a nice surprise this afternoon right in my dooryard. A flock of... more »

Harpswell - shorebirds
|
| |
At Stover Point Preserve this A.M. there was a large gathering of
SBDowitchers (268 in three groups) plus many BBPlovers. Also present were
2 very crisp and bright breeding White-rumped Sandpipers. As I was lining
them up, a border collie running alongside a small car, entered the fray
and flushed everything out of there. Also a likely LBDowitcher among the... more »

Thick-billed murre vs. penguin link
|
| |
Hi,
I attached an article on why penguins cannot fly. They compare
thick-billed murre and pelagic cormorant diving energetics with similar
sized penguins. The interesting part was the thick-bill murre
comparisons. I found it on Scientific American on-line blogs.

Recent HOLDEN photos for fun
|
| |
I'm especially enjoying the spring returnees from my window, and have included some recent photos (including winter ones) at this address: [link].
There have been 3 male rose-breasted grosbeaks here together for the last week, but today they weren't quite so tolerant of each other's company. There's a girl in the mix now.... more »

Sandhill Cranes
|
| |
Can anyone tell me if there are still any sandhill cranes around and if so,
where they might be? I've got out of state company coming tomorrow and
they would love to add sandhill cranes to their list.
thanks,
Linda

Extralimital - COMMON RINGED PLOVER - Plum Is, MA
|
| |
Well, apparently the rarities are showing up along with the very good warbler fallout on the coast. Suzanne Sullivan found a photographed a Common Ringed Plover at Sandy Point (south end of Plum Island, MA) May 20, and the bird continued through yesterday. Her photos were vetted by Jeremiah Trimble and Marshall Iliff - def helps that it's in breeding... more »

Mount Desert Island and Down East Birds: Roseate, Arctic and Common Tern, Common Murre, Atlantic Puffin and many Razorbills. Ruby-throated Hummingbird and Magnolia Warbler at sea. Road Scholar May 21 2013 Petit Manan, Washington, US-ME
May 21, 2013 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Protocol: Stationary
Comments: Road Scholar Down East Ornithology Course May 21 2013. Today's trips took us to Petit Manan for a preliminary spring survey. There are student interns on the island already, who we talked to by phone, getting the early scoop on who is around and some of the players that have already arrived. Tern numbers were only about 500 and we saw and heard Arctic, Common and a Roseate Tern who gave us an excellent flyby showing the elongated tail and much white tail and wings compared to the Common and Arctic. Many Atlantic Puffins and Razorbills are at the Island. We also found a good number of Razorbills along our transect coming to the Island. One Common Murre was found and seen by several of the group but we lost sight of it and did not relocate.... more »
