Mount Desert Island and Down East Birds: Roseate, Arctic and Common Tern, Common Murre, Atlantic Puffin and many Razorbills. Ruby-throated Hummingbird and Magnolia Warbler at sea. Road Scholar May 21 2013 Petit Manan, Washington, US-ME May 21, 2013 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM Protocol: Stationary Comments: Road Scholar Down East Ornithology Course May 21 2013. Today's trips took us to Petit Manan for a preliminary spring survey. There are student interns on the island already, who we talked to by phone, getting the early scoop on who is around and some of the players that have already arrived. Tern numbers were only about 500 and we saw and heard Arctic, Common and a Roseate Tern who gave us an excellent flyby showing the elongated tail and much white tail and wings compared to the Common and Arctic. Many Atlantic Puffins and Razorbills are at the Island. We also found a good number of Razorbills along our transect coming to the Island. One Common Murre was found and seen by several of the group but we lost sight of it and did not relocate.... more »

South Coast fallout, continued
Hi all, Jeannette and I continued our birding day, heading north through Wells. The coastal fallout was evident at least through Cape Neddick. Despite the time (2:15-4:30pm), weather (increasing E wind, fog, and soon drizzle), the neighborhood adjacent to The Nubble was very productive. Select migrant counts in a much-less-than-exhaustive search:... more »

Apparent Bicknell's Thrush Evergreen Cemetery
I just got back to Maine today after an 11 day absence (which start just when the warblers started arriving!), and I had to get out and do some birding. Headed over to Capisic Pond and say a good collection of warblers, highlighted by two Wilson's Warblers and a few Blackburnian's, as well as a SY male Orchard oriole and my FOY Olive-sided Flycatcher. A pair of... more »

31 species - Viles Arboretum, Augusta
Five birders, including one intrepid new birder from Minnesota, braved the drizzle and outright rain this morning at the arboretum and found the following birds. Also seen by another birder was a flock of Short-billed Dowitchers flying overhead, as well as Blackpoll warblers. - Margaret Viens Waterville... more »

Green Point - interesting morning
The sporadic sprinkles this A.M. may have shut down some singing, but on the other hand, it seemed like the end of the heavier downpours inspired some species to sing harder. Altho' the object was to find Orchard Oriole, several other events and sites made up for this miss. 1. At least 2 singing male BGGnats. At opposite ends of the lower... more »

Warblers Cape Neddick west of Tpike
Saw my first Blackburnian early this afternoon! Absolutely gorgeous, omg. Also in the mix way up in the tree tops, a Chestnut-sided and a Black-throated Green. Been hearing my resident Pine Warbler all spring but still can't see it. I have a small woodlot with not a lot of sky between the red oaks. Saw the warblers from my 3rd floor balcony ;-).... more »

Fort Foster fallout (ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, 20spp warblers), Kittery, 5/12
Hi all, Jeannette and I enjoyed an outstanding morning of birding at Fort Foster in Kittery today. After a couple of quick stops, we didn't arrive until 7:50, but didn't depart until 12:55. Although every concentration of warblers is not necessarily a fallout, this event certainly fit the bill. I need to go back and look at the overnight weather info, but I have a feeling this grounding may not have been due to precip or fog, but rather the interface where light southerly tailwinds met an increasing easterly crosswind. Most of the Swainson's Thrushes were foraging in treetops, and the brush was just crawling with yellowthroats. The entrance road was deafening with birdsong.... more »
