Today a beautiful male Purple Finch was singing in the yard.  It's been 7 months (Aug. 18) since seeing any in this part of Oxford County although until then they were always here until snow season.  Red-breasted Nuthatches have been the other big absentee.  They were common year-round  until early last October, when they seemed to dwindle and vanish from  the feeders in the space of a couple of weeks.  I haven't seen a RBNH in the area since Oct. 21.  There must surely be more going on than the neighbor cutting down a few pasture pines on his property.

Seems the same has happened with the red breasted nuthatches here in Saco; my sister has had 2-3 or more year-round for a number of years but this year we have seen none since late October. No building or disruptions in the area; they must have been irrupting somewhere else!
