Visitors:Not many people were out in the conditions today, but 5 stopped by the
Hawkwatch.
Weather:After a rip-roaring start to the season, we came back to the realities of
March hawkwatching in Maine these past two days. Similar to yesterday,
winds were strong and gusty out of the north and northwest. Mostly sunny
conditions kept the bitterness out of the day at least, but temperatures in
the mid-30s to low 40s required our winter clothes.
Raptor Observations:Another slow migration day, unsurprisingly. Even the local raptors were
mostly no-shows. A Red-shouldered Hawk was displaying in the morning, and
one of the pairs of Red-tailed Hawks made a nice pass close over the summit
with kiting behavior observed in the afternoon.
Non-raptor Observations:22 species were observed from the summit today. Birds deemed migrating
included: 26 American Robins, 8 American Goldfinch, 5 Mallards, 5 Common
Mergansers, 5 Eastern Bluebirds, and 4 Canada Geese.
Predictions:Winds will finally let up overnight, and with a small ridge of high
pressure, light winds will continue throughout the day tomorrow, currently
forecast to slowly rotate from the NW to the SE. While clouds will begin to
arrive tomorrow afternoon, it looks like a great day for hawks to move
ahead of the next storm system.
