For those interested in seeing the avian repercussions of Hurricane Irene, a new blog was emerged that gives a terrific state by state summary, updated several times per day:

South Carolina birders have already seen Sooty Terns, frigatebirds, etc....

Given that this storm won't be as organized as Hurricane Bob back in 1991, it's anybody's guess where birds might be found.  The eye of Bob went right down Seawall Beach!  Really spectacular.

Large lakes could be as productive as the coast and if I lived near an inland body of water, I'd be checking it out carefully.  Also, it's very likely many coastal spots like Popham Beach S. P.  will be closed, at least on Sunday.  Check before heading out.

Be sure to post sightings, assuming that we have the electricity for such communications.

Certainly be very careful.

Best, Peter

Spoke to the folks at Popham this morning. Popham Beach (the whoooole
park) WILL be closed tomorrow. Parking on the road and walking in
(the usual custom there when closed) will also be prohibited. Assume
Reid S.P. will be likewise, since the dictum "came down from Augusta".

We love to see rarities too, but from our perspective as rehabilitators, birds taken far from home by a storm like Irene are often birds in trouble.   If an injured or debilitated bird is found and can be safely rescued (and assuming phone lines are still up) please don’t hesitate to call us at 382-6761.  We can refer to other facilities that are closer to a given location if need be.

Thanks!

While I agree that caution should be used ... of course... I was in
Hurricane Bob in Woods Hole, Mass and we got hit with the full force of the
storm. When it peaked at 130 MPH winds, there was no way you did not want
to be someplace secure! Needless to say I was in the thick of it with my
camera and it was spectacular to witness. Boats flying off of moorings, and
people getting knocked over by speeding gusts of wind through narrow spaces
between buildings!! Herring Gulls were seen plummeting into objects like
trees and buildings............ I think this will not be that exciting but
the birds are going to be great. For all you listers out there get your
checklists ready it should be an interesting event none the less.

Anyone from MDI or the area interested in going out please call or email as
it will be great to see what we can fine.

Happy birding

I may have missed it in the thread, so if anyone else is in the same situation, here's the blog URL: http://hurricaneirene2011.blogspot.com/
