I just came across a very helpful new expansion of the error message
alert. Not being a wiz at mail protocols and stuff like that, the
previous error messages were generally unhelpful for solving problems.
I have an alias (for some elists) I use as an added address to my
mobileme account and couldn't figure out how to send messages from
that address using Mailsmith. The new error message I got today
actually told me how to solve the problem! Great, and many thanks,
Rich.

For people who are curious this was the error message I got:

"Mail account “(my alias address)”, user ID “(my mobileme ID)”:

An error occurred while sending mail to “smtp.mac.com”.

This server does not support secure (CRAM-MD5) SMTP authentication. To
allow Mailsmith to send mail through this server, turn on the “Allow
Clear Text SMTP Authentication” option in the “Advanced” tab for this
account. (Application error code 23324)."

Perfect timing, I was just going to post along those lines.I have ported
earlier (months) that Mailsmith wont send, only receive. THen it had a
header that my isp thought was spammy. No one could fix the problem,
including me. SO Mailsmith withered and Mail took over. Now Mail has gone
missing. One day it opened as a new program. I can't get either Mail or
Mailsmith to fetch mail anymore. I am writing this on my web mail
interface. It's slow, I have to go through many screens and passwords to
get here, but it is basically working.

I have imported all my old mail messages into Mailsmith and queried any
mentions of SMTP. I have POP 110 and SMTP 587 SSL negotiated ESMTP active
and clear text. I Have tried as many other configurations as I Could find
and so far, all I get are errors. My site uses a self signed certificate of
authenticity which keeps giving me errors as well. I checked with the
server folks and they insist this is normal so set it to always allow.

I may be having problems here on my machine although I dont knpow how I
would diagnose that. I am running 10.5 and have now ordered 10.6 thinking a
fresh update to a system might clear out any system corruption.

Otherwise I amaat a loss.

If anyone has any ideas on how to get Mailsmith working, I would very much
apprecuiate it.
