Hello guys,

I have problem with my laptop Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi which has AMD
Turion=99 64 X2 dual-core TL-50 1.6 GHz with 1.5 GB of ram.

I'm running i386 6.2-RC1 upgraded to 6.2-PRELEASE via RELENG6 tag
since I don't have more than 4 GB of ram.

I have these lines add to my custom generic kernel
options SMP
device cpufreq
device smbus

I have this in my rc.conf
powerd_enable=3D"YES"

But the the laptop even doesn't boot some times, and if booted it
hangs all the time, till I hashed out powerd_enable=3D"YES"

hints?

Thank you,
Abdullah Ibn Hamad Al-Marri

1) Try patch from ariff@
http://people.freebsd.org/~ariff/misc/idlecpu_apic_4.diff

and set /boot/loader.conf
hw.apic.idle_cpu to "1" or "2"

2) For HDA, use ariff@ RELENG_6 patch:-
http://people.freebsd.org/~ariff/snd_RELENG_6_20061220_136_lowlatency.dif=
f.gz

Set /boot/loader.conf
boot_verbose=3D"YES"
sound_load=3D"YES"
snd_hda_load=3D"YES"

---
As stated by ariff@ :-
Please supply enough information while doing bug reporting!

1) uname -a
2) pciconf -lv | grep -B 4 audio
=09
In case the driver loaded, but failed to work:

3) dmesg | grep ^pcm , or grep ^pcm /var/run/dmesg.boot
whichever seems appropriate
4) sysctl hw.snd.verbose=3D2 ; cat /dev/sndstat
5) sysctl hw.snd
6) output of /usr/sbin/mixer

... along with your kernel config

freebsd-m...@freebsd.org is the official channel to report and =
discuss anything related with sound and multimedia.

Hope this helps.

Subject: FreeBSD 6.2-RC1 issues Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi

Hello guys,

First thanks for the hard work to make FreeBSD good for desktop =
environment.

Here is my case with Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi with the latest bios 2.40

It shares the same mobo with 3100, and 5110

FreeBSD 6.1 CD1 wasn't able to boot at all.

I used FreeBSD 6.2-RC1, then I was able to boot.
booting with acpi disabled crash and reboot the laptop.

So I went ahead, installed the 6.2-RC1, then I upgraded the OS via the
csup to RELENG6, now it runs FreeBSD 6.2-PRERELEASE.

The laptop has AMD Turion x2 64, but I used i386, since the laptop
only has 1.5 GB of ram.

I was able to install x11+KDE via packages.

Here are the issues I face with it now.

1. I can't boot with acpi disabled, it crashes all the time.

2. I can't use my WLAN which is broadcom, I was forced to use an older
drivers, since ndis has problem with reading the latest driver from
broadcom.
Here are the files
http://bb.wearab.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=3D472&d=3D1166427326
http://bb.wearab.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=3D473&d=3D1166427326

And here is the 78 MB full package for the driver in zip file
ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_3100_5100_5110/driver/802=
bg_broadcom_v4.10.40.0.zip

Could someone convert the 2 files to a kernel module? please let me =
know.

4. Bluetooth doesn't work.

5. RealTek chip High Definition Audio System isn't detected, and
doesn't work for sure.

6. The laptop doesn't shutdown or restart, it says disk sync .. then
it displays the uptime, and stays there, I have to press the power
button to switch it off.

Suggestions or hints are welcome.

Best Regards,

Unrelated but might be helpful though.

> 2) For HDA, use ariff@ RELENG_6 patch:-

Where do you see there is a problem with the sound btw?

To the OP, please provide at first an output from those commands:

sysctl dev.cpu
sysctl dev.powernow
sysctl dev.acpi_throttle

If there is something from both dev.powernow and dev.acpi_throttle,
please check what driver is actually faulty by disabling one.

For exemple, putting that line:
hint.acpi_throttle.0.disabled="1"
onto /boot/loader.conf
will disable acpi_throttle.
The same apply for powernow:
hint.powernow.0.disabled="1"

Note that a verbose dmesg (boot -v) might be helpful also.

Cheers,

Thanks. Could you please try this path:

http://people.FreeBSD.org/~bruno/powernow.c.pending_bit_stuck.diff

cd /sys/i386/cpufreq
patch < /path/to/powernow.c.pending_bit_stuck.diff
cd /sys/modules/cpufreq
make
make install
make clean

then reboot and please report if that help with the powerd problem.

Cheers,

Oops, I forgot you included cpufreq to your config file. Of course,
you need to rebuild your kernel instead of regenerating the cpufreq
module.

Greetings Burno,

Thanks for your kind prompt to help.

I'm not advanced user to apply patches, I didn't reach this level yet :P

Can you please give the details HOWTO?

# cd i386/
# ls
Makefile compile i386 isa svr4
acpica conf ibcs2 linux xbox
bios cpufreq include pci
# cd cpufreq/
# ls
est.c p4tcc.c powernow.c smist.c
# fetch http://people.FreeBSD.org/~bruno/powernow.c.pending_bit_stuck.diff
powernow.c.pending_bit_stuck.diff 100% of 6379 B 23 kBps
# patch < /path/to/powernow.c.pending_bit_stuck.diff
/path/to/powernow.c.pending_bit_stuck.diff: No such file or directory.
# ls
est.c powernow.c.pending_bit_stuck.diff
p4tcc.c smist.c
powernow.c

Thank you,

Yes, of course, but I just found my patch will make thinks worst. I'm
currently reworking it.

It should be ok now.

For detailed instruction:

cd /usr/src/sys/i386/cpufreq
fetch http://people.FreeBSD.org/~bruno/powernow.c.pending_bit_stuck.diff
patch < powernow.c.pending_bit_stuck.diff

Now if you do have still your
/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/ARABIAN
then:

cd /usr/obj/usr/src/sys/ARABIAN
make
make install

or if you have already removed /usr/obj, then rebuild your kernel via

cd /usr/src
make kernel KERNCONF=ARABIAN

Had the same problem where powerd would hang my HP Pavilion dv8000
system. I worked arround the problem by using the following in
rc.conf:

powerd_enable=3D"YES"
powerd_flags=3D"-a maximum -b maximum"

Of course this makes powered do nothing when on battery. What I think
is happening is that powered is too aggressive in downgrading the
clock speed, that it eventually sets the clock to a value that is so
low that the system stops responding.

You might as well have
powerd_enable=3D"NO"

I have an HP nx6125 that will randomly hang if powerd is enabled and
if you search back through the mailing lists, there are a few other
people with similar problems. I've done some experimenting and in my
case, it's the clock speed transitions that cause a hang. The actual
clock speed is irrelevant. I believe it's a race condition or a
timing bug.

All this sounds strange, because i bought this very notebook for my wife 22=
=20
days ago, installed 6.2-PRE and it works totally stable for almost a month=
=20
now. Here she is with this book:=20
http://forum.allunix.ru/index.php?act=3DAttach&type=3Dpost&id=3D4 Looks pr=
etty=20
happy, doesn't she? :-))) =20
The only thing is that this book doesn't reboot or shut the power down when=
i=20
tell him to 'reboot' or 'reboot -p'. It just syncs discs and hands with no=
=20
explanations. But it works just fine.
