Lately, I added a cdwriter to my scsi bus (2940UW adaptec card on
164sx system). It is a yamaha 8424. Since then, my scsi bus is having
difficulties: it gets reset way too often (sometimes 3 times one shot!)
as if there was a termination problem. I checked the terminations,
changed the cable and I still get the problem. It is weird since uppon
system reset, it never resets twice. Only SRM and loader do it.
It is as if the bus was reset too fast. When it gets reset twice,
scsi bus poling fails and I get only two devices (dva0 and pka). Has
anyone else seen this problem. I'm about to change the card for a 2940
to see if it's the card but I just wanted to know it this problem has
been seen.

You can probably check setting of the SRM variables, like
pka0_fast
pci_parity
etc.
Is Yamaha a fast scsi device?

You didn't mention what other devices are connected to your 2940uw and on
which connectors of it. Since SRM does not see the 2940uw, I am curious
how you boot.
I would look for a Symbios controler (cheep on eBay), or Qlogics 1040.
Yoriaki Fujimori
The SRM sees the adapter as pka7 which is fine. The adapter can be
configured using the Alphabios. I really don't see why you guys aren't
seeing it on SRM. I have the last SRM console for the SX which is 5.7 I
beleive. Anyways, if you guys tell me this card is hardly supported,
then I should change it. I don't like it tough. I always liked Adaptec
scsi cards on PCs... I hardly know the other brands tough. Symbios and
Qlogic ... Any good?
Do you have the same problem with the 2940? If so, then it's of no
use to try it. It is weird, I really can boot with this card...

I like to think that it is supported, but as the maintainer of the
driver, perhaps I'm somewhat biased.
Can you provide any additional information about the problem? Dumping
the kernel messages to another machine via a serial console would be
a really good start.

AlphaBIOS is a totally different beast, and it does support Adaptec
controllers.

I don't know about resetting slow devices too fast, can it do
something like this? I mean, my CDROM is very slow to reset and the
Yamaha is quite slow too.

Why is the AlphaBIOS support still around, if NT isn't?
Does Tru64 work with AlphaBIOS?
It seems that Compaq is either throwing money into continuing
support for a useless console monitor, or that FreeBSD needs
to switch over to using AlphaBIOS (uck).

Qlogic 1040's are hard to find??? I found a truck load on eBay a several
months ago for $30 each.
Symbios based ones are hard to find??? I've also seen Symbios branded UW
controllers for $25-$35 (I got one for $31 to put in my AS250). Not to
mention Tekram and DECpaq ones.

FreeBSD doesn't need to switch at all, in that case.
I'm basically sick of this thread coming up every six months or so.
Folks; you just need to deal with reality, and frankly, pissing on about
which SCSI adapter is supported by ancient Alpha hardware has very little
at all to do with any sort of reality.
Get a life.
Oh, and if you want a supported disk adapter for an old Alpha, hit up
eBay for an old Mylex RAID controller with Alpha firmware. You should be
able to get a single-channel unit for around $20 or so.

I think only the PC164 (no LX or SX) requires memory installation in pairs.

From what I can tell, Nor did you have a 164SX. ;)
From the product brief at
http://gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/Digital/info/semiconductor/literature/164sxpb.pdf
it certainly sounds like a 164sx -- 1MB Bcache, Cypress Super I/O,
etc. I don't know whats up with the "Quanta, Atom server" line.
Normand, in regard to your SCSI problems. The 2940 (and most U/W scsi
cards) can only use 2 of their 3 connectors (2 68pin OR 1 68pin and 1
50 pin) without running into problems. Are you using only 2
connectors? The FreeBSD Adaptec driver used to yell at you if you
violated this rule and connected up all three ports.

NOPE. The PC164SX does not have L3 cache. That's why I bought a PWS to
replace mine. From the "AlphaPC 164SX Motherboard" User's Manual:
L1 Icache 16KB, direct-mapped, instruction cache on the CPU chip
L1 Dcache 8KB, direct-mapped, data cache on the CPU chip
L2 backup cache Onboard 1MB, direct-mapped, synchronous SSRAM
backup cache with 128-bit data path

Sweet when I can boot. My problem still persist. The bus gets reset

I am only using the narrow interface.
The IDs of my scsi devices are 0,1,2 for hard disks, 4 for the
Yamaha and 6 for the NEC-222 cdrom, 7 of course being the adapter. I
didn't try this config in a PC tough but I'm pretty confident that it
will work since I don't have problems once I get through the loader
process (SRM + loader). FreeBSD has never failed resetting the bus.
Only SRM and loader do.
My 2940UW can be configured through AlphaBIOS. I just resetted the
values to default...

Yes. A 2930u2 has an external narrow, internal narrow, and internal LVD
connector. A 2940u2 has an external narrow, internal narrow, internal
wide, and internal LVD connects. The only difference between a 2940u2
and 2940u2w is the external connector/bus.
Sorry to doubt you. I have heard many, many, many times in the past that
no 21164-based Alpha's SRM supported Adaptec controllers.
Anybody want to buy my AlphaPC 164SX now? ;-)
