[discuss] Oppen Office for iPad ?

I was just wondering if you were planning to develop an oppen office
aplication for ipad ?
Maybe it's not possible.. I'm very interested in selling my Macbook for an
iPad, but without any office suite, it would be difficult to work with it
(I'm a student, and I would use it to take my lessons) even if iWorks exist
for ipad, I need an application which would be able to write and read .doc
and .ppt documents.

the MacBook which is more of an open platform, the ipad will have an
extremely closed operating system (Iphone OS) which doesnt make it possible
to load different languages or applications like the one we use.
Recoding OOo in Objective-C would be prohibited and since it seems that the
apps are managed by Apple, it could make little business sense to allow a
third party (and free) competing product like ours.
However just like the iphone, there are solutions like remote desktop that
allow to access an Open environment such a Linux desktop over the web. (look
on the history of this list for OpenOffice.org Online).
Again there could be 'jailbreaks' that will make the ipad run Linux and in
that case OOo would be doable on an ipad but of course it will inherit all
the issues from breaking warranty and support and such.

iWork for Mac can do that, and I have not heard that iWork for iPad won't. On the other hand, the iPad really isn't made to be used without a real computer to host it; without a host, it can't print, it can't make backups, and it can't install new releases of its operating system.

I suggest you test it before tossing your real computer. I suspect that
despite Steve Jobs hype the keyboard could be ah... a little interesting to
use for real applications.
Generally open source app's require several users wanting to port the software
to their hardware of choice for it to happen. Sun Microsystems as the major
developer of OO.o may not be able to join Steves glee club if it's balance
sheet is anything to go by.
BTW "... wondering if you were planning..." - the 'you' that _you_ have
contacted is a mailing list primarily composed of die hard users, not so many
developers. So the above tongue in cheek opinions are my own, and are not
representative of either Sun Microsystems or OO.o developers. The correct way
to raise a Request For Enhancement for most OSS projects is to add the RFE to
the bug tracker system and see how many votes it gets. GLWT

There will be iWorks for the iPad. iWorks on a Mac reads and writes MS
Office documents. I understand it will do the same on the iPad. It
should handle everything you need at class. I would still want a
computer at home as well.
I think my next upgrade will be an iMac and an iPad instead of getting a
MacBook Pro.

A cheap netbook as a replacement for a MacBook? Ridiculous! Save some
money instead of getting an iPad and get a far inferior product.

Well I am not sure a netbook is so bad, first of all is more portable but
still lets you type at a normal speed. And also and more importantly it also
have the most appreciated 10hr battery life which is enough to go a whole
day without looking for a power chord/socket.
I am seriously considering it for my international traveling and
presentations. At the end of the day my netbook has surpass the usability of
my big powerful laptop the same way the big powerful laptop replaced my
bigger powerfuler (is this a word?) workstation.
And you get a much more complete Office suite in OpenOffice.org :)
