Archiving / unarchiving MailChimp groups

We have a client wanting to use groups, which will allow them to
manage a number of segments within their website users. We are using
your API to integrate with a CMS user base on our site, but I have a
question about Groups, and archiving / reinstating a group.

The issue is that they have "active" groups which might be up to 6
groups, and then they will have "dormant" groups, which may go a
number of months without any contact, and they would prefer not to
allow people to join / leave the group when they go dormant.

The only two solutions I can think of are some kind of archiving
process, or some kind of filter on our side which hides / displays
groups as they become dormant / active.

Is there any solution MailChimp might be able to offer?

We don't really have any functionality like that, but you should be
able to build it just fine by filtering inputs as you described.
You'll also want to make sure you use the Advanced Forms for your list
and either customize the inputs there too, or have them redirect back
to your site.
