WOMEN'S ONLINE RANKS RISE
Issue: Gender
This year for the first time, the number of women using online services is
likely to match the number of men online, a survey of the International
Data
Group predicts. Last year women were 48% of the people on the
Internet, and the percentage of women has been growing consistently. Frank
Gens, a senior vice president with International Data said, "Women aren't
into just surfing the hours away." They tend to go onto the Internet with a
specific goal in mind, get it done and get off. That helps to explain why
women spend 7.5 hours per week online and men spend 9 hours per week. Women
are more likely to send e-mail than men. Women are still advised to be
cautious online, even when taking part in discussion groups that cater to
women. "Don't give out personal information, like saying 'I live here,'"
said one mother who used sites and discussion groups to find treatment for
an ailing son.

The Benton Foundation's Communications Policy and Practice (CPP)
<http://www.benton.org/cpphome.html> Communications-related Headline
Service is posted Monday through Friday. The Headlines are highlights
of news articles summarized by staff at the Benton Foundation. They
describe articles of interest to the work of the Foundation -- primarily
those covering long term trends and developments in communications,
technology, journalism, public service media, regulation and philanthropy.
While the summaries are factually accurate, their often informal tone does
not represent the tone of the original articles. Headlines are compiled by

The Benton Foundation works to realize the social benefits made possible
by the public interest use of communications. Bridging the worlds of
philanthropy, public policy, and community action, Benton seeks to shape
the emerging communications environment and to demonstrate the value of
communications for solving social problems. Through demonstration
projects, media production and publishing, research, conferences, and
grantmaking, Benton probes relationships between the public, corporate,
and nonprofit sectors to address the critical questions for democracy in
the information age. Other projects at Benton include:

January 25, 1999
ED-X LLC LAUNCHES GLOBAL DISTANCE LEARNING WEB SITE
Austin, Texas (USA) - Ed-X today launches the "Distance Learning Channel",
a
new portal web site designed to be the most comprehensive resource for
online education. The new site (http://www.ed-x.com) will provide access to
news and information on distance learning courses from over 1,500
universities and other learning institutions worldwide.
"This is the beginning of a revolution in education," said Mark Hall, Ed-X
co-founder and Director of Operations. "Imagine the convenience and
flexibility of studying a foreign language from a native speaker, learning
a new business strategy from a noted expert, or even earning a complete
degree through the Internet in your own home or office."
The educational content ranges from non-credit classes and continuing
education up to full degree programs. Already students in Europe and Asia
are working on MBA's through the Internet from universities in North
America. Students in the United States are studying law through the
Internet
from a law school in London. In most cases, these learners will never set
foot in a traditional classroom before receiving their degrees. The barrier
of distance is eliminated through the use of computers.
Ed-X's Distance Learning Channel site contains six main areas:
- News section, updated weekly;
- 85 Searchable database of worldwide online courses with direct links to
the universities offering desired courses;
- Topical index of popular academic subjects;
- Registration page with email alerts as new course offerings are posted;
- Post News section where universities can send news and course items to
the
site's database at no charge
- Links page for access to textbooks, journals and other academic
materials.
Ed-X Distance Learning Channel will be translated into German and other
foreign languages in the first quarter of 1999 to expand its international
audience. The company will also release its own non-credit educational
modules incorporating audio, video and text early this year.
