Airline Route Networks

Hello Evan,
I'm considering purchasing Magic Map and I'm trying out the trial
version. I'd like to purchase the software to create maps
demonstrating the route network of airlines. For example, I like to
produce a map showing where JetBlue Airways flies from New York's JFK
to every airport they each serve in the US. I'd like to connect JFK
and the other US airports using solid or dotted lines. Is there a way
to connect the airports/points using lines?

Hi Roberto,

This is a "secret feature" (i.e. not fully baked), but here's how you
can create line segments connecting two cities:

Create a CSV file with one of these sets of columns (along with your
other data):

* latitude1, longitude1, latitude2, longitude2

OR

* city1, state1, city2, state2

OR

* zip code1, zip code2

The created lines will follow Great Circle arcs just like you'd expect
for airline networks. You can color them and define dash patterns as
you wish.

Thanks for your quick response! For the first CSV example using latit. and long., can I also add city labels (without state) in the CSV dataset? If so, what is the column format for doing so.

Hi Roberto,

You can add labels for the line itself (using a column name of your
choosing, such as "route name"), but not to the endpoints. For that
you'll need a separate CSV with the airports.

Hi Evan

I'm just testing out the trial version before making the full version
purchase. When drawing lines between points using a CSV and lat/long
is it possible to change the colour of individual lines. I am trying
to make maps for my tour business and want to colour code the route
depending on the transport used between points.

Hi Jason,

You should be able to color individual lines using the Paint tool in the toolbar.

Hi Evan

Sorry but I can't get this to work. I have tried to upload a CSV file
formatted as you say and it only draws half of the last line of data.
I did a test on your example in another post for a line between
California and New York and the same problem came up. Is there
something obviously wrong that I might be doing? Here's my CSV file:

Thanks for the detailed report. I've looked into it and it looks like
there are some bugs in this feature. I've fixed them and will send a
new version to Apple ASAP. Magic Maps 1.3.6 is currently in review at
Apple, so this feature should be fixed in version 1.3.7 -- hopefully
in the App Store in 2-3 weeks.

Ok, 1.3.7 was approved by Apple and will appear in your country's App
Store today or tomorrow. It fixes the bugs in point-to-point routing
as well as a bug in SVG exports of the world map.
