AppViz contacted me about free / discounted licenses for NSCoder / CocoaHead groups. They decided to give us two free licenses, and a $10 discount code for everyone else.
I gave the first one away "first-to-reply style" on Twitter, going to @vanvlack. Traditionally weekends are bad because people who have families are told to
put the computers away on the weekends. You'll know about this all too soon.

I know that some of us starting August 29th (when the Fall semester
starts back up) will not be able to make it on Mondays to NSCoder. I
was wondering what people thought about changing the day that we meet.

Hello! If you do C you're well on your way! The only system
requirement is a Mac with an Intel processor. The very first
generation of any of the Intels (MacBook, MacBook Pro, etc) can do it.
Download Xcode and swing by some time and we'll show you the ropes. :)

We will occasionally be at sector67, check the previous messages for an idea
of when.
As far as equipment, you must work with an intel based Mac. Which means
anything you by new. If buying used and it has anything like G5/G4/G3 in the
name or on the case, it won't work. You could get in cheap with a Mac Mini

Hello! Sorry for all the spam tonight.
It looks like we're moving to Cool Beans. This is more in the spirit of NSCoder, and it's a better location for most people. They have a closed-off meeting room that can be reserved, and we can move the tables around as necessary, so I'm calling it the "wiki-room". This will be an on-going thread to keep tabs on our reservations.

I think id be more inclined to visit regularly if it were there instead of s67. I don't dislike s67, but I feel a bit out of place there. That and I have no idea where it is still. If Cool Beans is closer to MATC it would be easier for the directionally challenged like myself.

Very sorry! I didn't get the moderation email for some reason. We
generally assemble between 5-6 and stay until 8 or later. Everyone's
free to come or go when they please throughout the night. However, we
might be changing venue to Cool Beans.

Tonight is the beta of NSCoder at Cool Beans. Here's my thinking.
Pros:
- Located closer to MATC, where most people are going to school.
- A quieter, more relaxed environment than a hackerspace.
Cons:
- Slow wifi.
- Poor seating (solved by conference room)
We've got 6 people here right now so it the "vote with your feet" is that we like Cool Beans. What's your input? Unless anyone raises an issue, we'll meet here from now on.

I've alloc'd and init'd an NSCoder in Madison. We have iOS classes on Tuesday so that doesn't work for a lot of people, so we subclassed and overrode that method. We meet at a local hackerspace from 5PM until the cows come home on Monday nights.

Our first NSCoder Night was pretty successful. 8 or 9 of us met together for a night of nerd socializing and coding, with a bit of destruction involved (it's S67, can't be avoided), which is exactly what we wanted. I consider it a pretty good turn out considering snow-my-gosh conditions, and conflicting with Mad Railers.

Network stress testing

Hello!
After MadHackerHaus, we noticed that all network traffic at Sector67, wired and otherwise, was being routed through the wireless router. Since it runs a 216MHz processor, this did bad stuff and ended up with about 80% packet loss throughout the day.
I set up a Pentium III 800MHz running pfSense and all traffic is routed by this, except wireless traffic, which is routed by an AirPort extreme and shows up as (I believe) one client to the pfSense router. I think this should be relatively stable, and one being overloaded shouldn't affect the other, but there's only one good way to test this.
