Hindu Swamsweka Shangha Nepal is launching a massive movement to rescue Cows.  It is a joint venture of Madhesi pahadi, thaaru, etc where the political differences have ceased to exist since the truth behind the politics has been exposed.

The organization is performing puja of 1008 cows on holy day of ashtami in Bardiya.  It is organized by the Bheri zone committee of organization.  On October 18, the puja and rally will be held nationally.  On Dec 25, again a massive rally to rescue cows will he held in the west.

One of the CA members has been bribed bribed Rs. 50 lakh to propose rhinoceros as national animal in the parliament. This will enable them to kill cows legally.  Few weeks ago, a muslim tried to slaughter a cow, but was rescued by this organiznation.  Later the cow was worshiped by minister Badu. 13 muslims were arrested in Nepalgunj for cow slaughter and selling beef in Nepal.  Later, they were all released.  They proved that it was indeed buffalo meat, not beef by bribing Kathmandu. Of course, media ignored all these events.

‘Sarva dharma sambhava’, not ‘Secularism.’   Tilak B. Shrestha, Ph.D.   June 2006

Apparently some foreigners have come to Nepal and trying to teach us the virtue of being secular. Let us take a quick survey of today’s world. Presently there is not a single Hindu country in the world. 

Christianity is the state religion of 19 countries including Britain, Greece, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, Norway, Vatican, Haiti, Colombia, Panama, and Paraguay.  British queen or king has to take oath of defending Christianity. Costa Rica is legally secular but state supports churches. USA is legally secular, but both country and government has Christian characteristics. All the leaders including President and Chief justices take oath on the bible, not on secular constitution. Some of the American states have mandated to teach the bible in the public schools. Churches are quite active both in politics and education; and foreign evangelism. USA though preaches secularism supports Israel, a declared Jewish state. When South Vietnam was under US control, it always supported Vietnamese Christians at the expense of Vietnamese Buddhist, which makes almost 85% of the population. The martyrdom of many Buddhist monks for the justice is a well-documented history.

Israel is created solely in the basis of religion of Judaism.

Islam is the state religion of 25 countries including Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Brunei, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Tunisia.

Pakistan is created solely in the basis of Islam. By constitution, a non-Muslim cannot be the President or the Prime minister of Pakistan. A religious sect called ‘Ahmedia’ is officially prosecuted. Bangladesh was a secular country when created in 1971. But became an Islamic country in 1982 although about 20% of the population is non-Muslim. In Maldives only Muslims can be citizen.

In Syria only a Muslim can be president. Indonesia is legally secular, but state supports Islam. In Malaysia non-Muslims are officially second-class citizens. In Iran persecutions of non-Muslims, especially a sect called ‘Bahai’, are well documented. In Saudi Arabia, non-Muslims cannot take any of their personal religious objects like a bible.

Buddhism is the state religion of 5 countries including Bhutan, Cambodia, and Thailand.

There are 12 secular countries in the world including Nepal, India, Japan, USA, Australia, Romania, France, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Turkey and Azerbaijan.

While we're on the topic of rhinoceros and dirty democracy I just wanted to say I just finished a GREAT book. "Identity & Society - Social Exclusion and Inclusion in Nepal" by SNV's Social Inclusion Research Fund is a light read but very informative. I enjoyed it greatly and am looking to read the remaining papers that didn't make it into the book.

you know freedom of speech, religion, press, right to peacable assemble, right to petition government for a redress of grievance....

of course these freedoms come from the first amendment of the US constitution, but they seem like pretty good freedoms to me, so i'm just wondering...

and i realize we were only hindu kingdom in the world and that we enjoyed typing this as the first sentence to any paper we wrote about nepal, but what would a hindu democratic nepal entail? would only a hindu be given provision to become a pres/pm? would only hindus get to sweat for the country and enter government? or would it make space and be tolerant of muslims, buddhists, catholics, animists, farsis, sikhs, and why yes, even people like me, christians who call this place home.

I am embarrassed of few extremists who may have threatened your family anonymously.  But the experiences of others are no different.  We have been beaten everyday by a Christian teacher from Kerala because our Lord Ganesha had "huge belly".  I still remember; from KG to Grade 5.  The trend didn't end there and even in High School days those Xaverian Christian teachers would humiliate publicly for our faith.  And so has been the experience of everyone, race-wise.

I don’t think you are being treated any better/worse compared to pre-2006.  Neither have I been treated any better/worse post-2006 after Madhesis joined the state mechanism.  Nothing has changed.

I am not suspecting of the threat calls that you may have received; but it’s doesn’t digest very well with the everyday facts.  Muslims have Mosque/Madarsa everywhere and openly pray (with giant loud speakers) five times a day.  They think praying with loud speakers five times a day is their right, but they forget the duty to respect other’s privacy.  That’s why they pray with the loud speakers. 

If I remember correctly, every city in Nepal has these mosques and everywhere they scream.  Interestingly enough, they have one right in front of Durbar.  No government has ever interfered or asked them to Shut Up.  I wonder what stopped you from wishing someone from another religion openly and you had to “whisper”.

Historically, Christians and Muslims never got along.  In Nepal, under the roof of Hinduism, they were protected from Christian extremism.  With growing conversion, Muslims now feel insecure.  Reports are there that Muslims will launch a movement to revert back Nepal as a Hindu country. 

Let’s see where this country is heading towards….Afghanistan. Iraq, Israel…

We’ve to appeal the Buddhist organizations to rescue this Birth place of peace pioneer Lord Buddha.

Good question, but the factors that contributed to how I was treated/liked/feared accepted vary too much for me to give you a straight answer.

So, all I can say is I am happy I no longer have to worry about my mother receiving phone calls from anonymous folks telling my family my father's motorcycle number and threatening to take him to prison because his faith differs from the "country's" and having our phone bugged and having to whisper Merry Christmas like I did when I was a kid and that I can, this week, wish my Hindu friends a very Happy Dashain and my muslim friends Eid Mubarak as loud and as often as I like. I like that the town I live in that straddles the Indian border blares Hindu hymns late into the night and that I can hear the Imam call at the week hours of the morning and on Saturday morning I can make my way to a church.

The answer is "Yes", but only if Nepal were a Hindu country.  Since it's a secular and an exemplary "democratic" nation now, no one's faith/freedom/rights/justice is guaranteed.  Let's not get to the argument of whose dad had only been threatened and whose family has been chopped off.  You know about it.  We can write few books on "fear" and the unavoidable fear that we will have to live up with.

Perhaps the Christian-Muslim string will take a "serious" shape and not will be "funny" in the near future.  History is evidence and it cannot go wrong.  We can only pray for it to go wrong.

Build a system that works for us.  We don't have to copy from anyone.

Funny you mention how under the roof of Hinduism Muslims were protected from Christian extremism...I wasn't aware of Christians activities aimed at threatening the Muslims in Nepal.

As for whispering Merry Christmas as kids...well, what would you do if your dad was being threatened because he was christian? And wishing my friends on their religious holidays was meant to say I enjoy living in a place where people of different faiths co-exist.

In any case, your experience at St. Xavier by the school/staff and mine with the administration/government of Nepal....well, I guess proves there are various (some harmful) degrees of both our faiths...but my original question was "will my freedoms be granted in sarva dharma sambhava"...
