Hey Mad Railers,

With Steve's blessing, I thought I'd post this here.

We are looking for another Rails developer (or at least a fast learner
with experience using other modern web dev frameworks) to join our
group, which includes Kevin Alford, who many of you have met, and is
based at UW Madison.

Details at https://morgridge-researchrecruit.icims.com/jobs/1197/job
.

"Hold a bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent related work experience"

What amount of work experience is equivalent to a bachelor's degree? I suppose that depends on your opinion of bachelor's degrees?

(note: I'm not actually looking for a job, but that phrasing always strikes me as odd)

It's not my job posting, but I think the general idea is that you can't afford to exclude self-taught programmers who, for any one of many legitimate reasons, don't happen to have a bachelors degree from a traditional 4-year school.

In the software industry, particularly for a rails shop, a candidate's github profile is much more relevant than her college transcripts. I think the "equivalent experience" line is an HR-friendly way of saying "don't worry if you didn't go to college."

Cheers,
Brian
