For some reason, ever since I upgraded to Lion, VO announces me misspelled words when I read emails, not just when composing.
I guess it's ok not to always start with some sort of a polite greeting... I don't always do it when replying to messages. However, I think we should dedicate a bit more attention to our spelling. Some emails on the list are really creepy!
Please make a little effort to improve your spelling please. I am not talking about people with English difficulties. I am referring to people that sound like native American / English and do not review their emails before sending. English is my 4th language and I do try to sound coherent and use the right punctuation. It looks and plays nicer when using a text to speech!

I was born in French speaking Switzerland, so French is my mother tongue. My parents are Kurdish and immigrated from Turkey. I was taught German at school. My job is in English.
The bottom line is that I can manage Turkish, one dialect of Kurdish, French and English. I am not fluent in German.
I am a citizen of the world with my heart anchored in the USA.

Can we return to her original request? I agree. to speak frankly, not only is it that some people do not bother to spell check; but also, that they are thinking way ahead of what they're typing. As a result, they don't pay attention to the letters they are pressing on the keyboard. That makes for just plain sloppy writing, and, sometimes, you can't even read the message because the typing itself is inexcusably bad. Lucky this isn't one of those English grammar lists where one single space or letter or punctuation mark out of place and the moderator throws you off the list. I've never been on or read from such a list; but, I'm told they do exist.

I think part of the problem is these silly smartphones without physical keyboards. That's what I was using today when I hit the letter y instead of the letter t. Android doesn't even have the decency to tell you that you've misspelled a word. On top of that, going back to edit is like looking for a needle in a haystack. It's why I promptly corrected myself when Ricardo asked me to repeat what I'd written. I don't know if IOS handles this any better, as my IPad is in the shop, but I'd venture a bet it does. Another problem is speech to text, which I've heard a lot of visually impaired users saying they like to use. Even if using Zoom only in Mac OS, you get a nice red line if you type something misspelled. So, I don't know, on my part, I don't judge too critically when I see typing errors. Your milage may very.

I'd like to take issue on this to say that as long as one can make themselves understood, then the person is on the right track. You are very wrong to say people do not review their messages before sending as I know that people do that, I being for one.
Thank you.

Not to beat the topic to death, but knowing I'm not an English major and not great at spelling, I make every effort to send messages that sound as though I took the time to prepare them. Of course some of this comes from my professional world where we are expected to prepare messages that reflect thorough research etc. Even though we may begin to speak our messages etc. we should still take time to review them for accuracy and to ensure the message is clear. Oddly enough I have seen an increase in professional websites with spelling and grammatical errors and I'm not sure why this is. I for one really like the fact that I am alerted to the spelling errors I make or those errors where I have swapped letters.

I'm not looking to start a pissing contest here, but can you definitively state that you know every person reviews his/her messages prior to sending it? I really doubt that. You obviously take time to review your messages and I will not argue that point with you because I am not sitting with you when you send the message. I think the point is people should keep in mind that the messages they send are a reflection of themselves. So, if you want people to think of you as intelligent etc. you try to send intelligent sounding messages. Now of course we all have off days and messages get a bit garbled at times. :)

I agree this is being argued to death. OK I admit to some errors in posts, etc either through rushing through work, etc or having "Blonde days" and we're ALL guilty of it. It does however concern me that when reading a message with voiceover, a message with countless errors causes voiceover as you all know to miss pronounce a word or words thereby making them misunderstood. Some users may be communicating through a desktop or notebook and others through touch screen interfaces like the iphone and ipad, therefore it's rather easy to make errors through touch screen inaccuracies.
Please do take all these points into consideration but at the same time, consider what the target audience is listening to or reading so that it can be understood. The english language is often taken for granted, bearing in mind that there are many users on this forum who are not english speakers as a first language. So from that position, let's treat each other with respect and an intellectual stand point.
on a more amusing note, think of it this way, new words are invented every day, some which voiceover can pronounce, others it can't. like the welsh language. Voiceover can't even understand it let alone pronounce correctly as voiceover does not include a welsh dictionary component nor language set. I myself am not welsh but have come across pages where voiceover becomes garbled.
in summary, let us all try at least to make our subjects and replies legible to the average reader as well as screen readers.

I guess the important thing is we remember why we are on these lists to get a little help from each other and whilst today (I do not know about the US), politicians go on and on about how bad it is that people cannot write properly, People such as ourselves who rely on verbal communication are hopefully going to make extra effort to get their messages across in an intelligent and professional manner as for us we have to do more demonstrating to the world if we are going to succeed in our lives. I just don't think we should judge each other by our spelling as long as we get the help and advice we need to use our tools and gadgets. I hope I make sense as I always appreciate the help and the friends I may have made from the lists I belong to.

I think reviewing messages is an excellent thing to do. I even do this for messages to people I know well. I find a fair amount of letter transposition and characters left out, etc. so it's a good thing I do review.

Oh boy I agree 100%. I find it shocking how sloppily some messages appear; since most lists I'm on are blindness-related, I have no idea whether we as a group are more careless than others in general, but sometimes I think I know why we have such a high unemployment rate, smile! While nobody is perfect, and I head that list of imperfect people, I do believe some of us tend to not care about the appearance of that which we write; and, this is harmful to all of us since all our great words of wisdom live on in the various lanes of the super highway called the internet. Now, before I send this, let me spell check it, LOL! On Mar 2, 2012, at 9:27 AM, Teresa Cochran wrote:

Hello. I find more important people to read their manual a little before posting questions than their spelling mistakes. Many of us don't speak English very well but we still need to ask for help. On the other hand, I am sick and tired of reading the same questions again and again, especially those questions that are clearly answered in the voice over user guide. Also, a little Google research wouldn't be a bad idea before posting something obvious. Well, I better be careful when I ask something next time, so I will not do the same. <smile>
Kind regards. Nektarios.

Sorry for digging up this thread so late but I have over a thousand messages to look through and there is valuable information I might miss since I'm new to the Mac.
Now, I have just discovered another probable source for gross miss-spellings. I am a recent owner of a new Refreshabraille display and while on my IOS device, I can tweet in contracted Braille; problem is, sometimes, VO takes what I intend to be a punctuation mark and makes it a second word or something. In any case, my text gets garbled. Thus I find these errors while proof reeding what I just entered with the Braille display's keyboard. I hadn't realized this could happen so easily so Braille users, be careful when using contracted Braille. No criticism here but just a warning that you might get bit like I almost did. Also, word mode is a good help that helps with quick and dirty spell checking. At least, I can be reasonably sure that my message will sound right with speech:).
