Flash Player 9 (9.0.28.0) won't install

I've downloaded the flash player uninstaller from
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=1
and run it following the directions, and I've acquired the older Flash Player 9
versions from
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1.
I've tried to install the IE version of Flash Player 9.0.28.0 by running
flashplayer9r28_winax.exe but it just doesn't work. Although some files are
installed in the C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash folder, a message flashes
by during the install process that says that flash9a.ocx can't be installed.
After the intall (and reboot) I've gone to
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_15507 to check the
Flash Player version, but nothing shows up. This is very frustrating, and I
cannot find any information on what is happening or why. Anyone who can
provide any insight, please post here, and thanks in advance for your help.
