FWcs3 text engine driving me nuts

I have lately been experiencing a rather strange phenomenon with the cs3 text
engine. In the past I noticed that it would arbitrarily go to vertical text
alignment, even though I never choose that option. Now, it has begun to
auto-indent for no reason at all, no matter how wide I stretch the bounding
box, and often in the middle of a short word (four letters, ironically...)...
Any ideas as to what the heck is happening?...
