Hi everyone

I ‘m currently trying to translate an excel file which I convert into an open office document in omegaT, which is works fine as far as the translating goes, but I can’t convert the result back to an excel file which is what the client wants. Any suggestion how to solve this.

Very grateful for any reply, even if it just boils down to forget about it. At least then I know where I’m at.

What do you exactly mean by "I can't convert the result back" ?

Do you try to open the ODS file in OpenOffice.org ? Is there an error
message ?

Hi Jean-Christophe

what I mean is that I end up with a open office target text which
allows itself to be converted into a word document but I can't turn it
back into an excel file (which is what it originally was).

If this is too vague I will try to describe the steps more carefully
in a later mail.

Have to continue translating in the excel file itself now, because
that's the only solution that presents itself at the moment.

Your Excel file is a .xls file is that correct ?
When you open it in OpenOffice.org and convert it for use in OmegaT,
you must convert it to ODS format. In fact I am pretty sure that is
the only available format as far as OOo is concerned.

You put that file in the /source/ folder of your OmegaT project, you
open the project and proceed to the translation and when you're done,
you create the translated files.

That should give you an ODS file in the /target/ folder of your OmegaT
project.

That ODS file, when opened in OOo can be converted back to .xls, and I
am pretty sure that there is _no_ way OOo will propose you to convert
that back to .doc.

It is not vague, it is missing something. Because it is not possible
to convert Excel to OOo to Word.

Thanks Jean-Christophe,

I will try what you suggest, and will let you know what exactly I did
originally, and whether I manage to sort it out in the end.

By the way, the only downside to OmegaT that I've found up to now is
that I don't know anybody here who uses it. I'm based in Zurich,
Switzerland, and would actually be very happy to pay for a live
tutorial, or course, whatever - but it looks like no-one offers this.
(If someone out there feels he or she meets the bill, please contact
me).

Obviously most people do fine just using the manual, but as I haven't
worked with a translating tool before, some of this stuff is just too
dense for me.

Best,
Tessa
