Mayor Fenty could do some of this and it might help his image

London's mayor was very nearly killed on his bike and, as is
everything in England, it was captured on surveillance video:

Never underestimate the shear power of a truck (even it's swinging
door can pick up a car and hurl it around like a ragdoll) and how
vulnerable we are, no matter what we do :-(
Related but specifically promised for Ashley, the citizen-vigilante
who records ever bike lane violation in our fair city . . . which
shows that these things are really for parallel car parking. The
problem with all these good ideas and related laws is that cops will
rarely enforce, which makes them meaningless.

What would make you think it would be any different in DC versus any
other crowded city. It isn't that these people don't like cyclists,
they just think their time is more valuable than anybody else's time.
Had a lady parked on Elm Street in Bethesda right in the travel lane
talking on her cell phone. Mind you, it is one lane each way with
metered parking on both sides. I had half a mind to give her a push
with the F-350. With such a long truck (i.e., crew cab with 8 foot
bed), I actually had to back up and get the people behind me to back
up so that I could make it around her without giving her that push.
Had the same sort of incident at the Gaithersburg Town Center where
Dicks and Target is located. A guy was just stopped at a stop sign
chatting on the phone while a parking garage was 20 yards ahead. A
quick 20 yards and a right turn and he would have been out of
everybody's way. Instead, I had to wait for a break in oncoming
traffic to go around him. I parked the car in the parking garage, got
my daughter out of the car, and then made my way to cross the street
and get into Dicks. The guy was still parked at the stop sign. Stupid
move with my daughter in my arms, but I went up to him and his Lexus
and told him to get a move on, which he did. Probably took a look at
me with an unshaven face, boots, and rather plain clothing and got
scared.
Go to a McDonalds in DC and then go to one out in the "country" and
you will notice the difference. I first noticed it when on the way
back from hunting in Boonsboro/Keedysville we stopped at a McDonalds
on 301. People are completely different between the two locations.
Take care and be safe even if the law favors you. Death doesn't care
too much about laws.
