Kornheiser's remarks about attacking cyclists are absurd and
inflammatory. They should not be tolerated.
How would people feel if he suggested running down neighborhood kids
playing street hockey because they were in the road? Or taking pot
shots at the after-work softball league because their outfits look
like pajamas?
I would have imagined that ESPN would support sports broadly, in
whatever form.
I cannot get my nose twisted about this because I know that part of this program is designed to get a rise out of people. I don't think that he (Tony Kornheiser) is really asking citizens to rise up and run over cyclists. However, I am sure that there will be many cyclist who flood ESPN with emails to lash out against him. It will be interesting to see how ESPN reacts to the possible backlash. Does he get another two suspension or will it be a simple I am sorry.

This does seem to smack of one of those desperate efforts by a has-been journalist to try and regain some relevance by stirring up a controversy. These kind of attacks usually come from some no-name schmuck on WGAS (Who Gives A Sh*t) radio who is trying to generate circulation or establish themselves as "edgy" but TK?!? I thought he was an establishment sports journalist? Maybe he's slipping. Maybe the sports bloggers have him on the defensive, and he's having trouble justifying his bloated salary. Of course in the end he may in fact be inciting violence against cycling, which is why I did go ahead and submit to ESPN. --- On Thu, 3/18/10, Joseph Jefferson <max4...@yahoo.com> wrote: |

I really like what you wrote (and everyone else, too, but yours was
last). I am conflicted by a best course here, though. Your analogy
about Stern is perfect. He was fired, as you point out, but went on
unbowed and MUCH bigger nationally than he ever was here and more
offensive all the while. I wonder if it'd been better if he'd had to
apologize and change to keep his job instead of getting all the
notoriety for getting fired. Imus, too, came back.
Maybe Kornball can be changed and this publicity (there's no such
thing as the bad variety) can be harnessed for good and for change and
in our direction. His audience is certainly the one we need to reach
the most (road raging drivers).
One thing's crystal clear: however Lance won those 7 Tours is pretty
much irrelevant now and whether we like him or not, he's got an army
of 2.5 million on Twitter (many not cyclists) and he's invariably used
that for good more often than not and occasionally against the course
of facile popularity (including opposing a war when 90% of the country
was for it). I don't think any national bike organization could've
affected this change so quickly.
We'll all tune in tomorrow, as others have pointed out . . . and I'd
never even heard of this station before.
Some corrections that would be nice and edifying for Kornball's
audience. Smooth surfaced roads actually were invented for and
advocated by cyclists before the advent of automobiles. Rock Creek is
a national park (the first actually) and there's no way that commuter
traffic should be allowed there (or Clara Barton or GW Parkway, where
bikes are entirely prohibited!). Our parks should be reserved for
recreational use and protection (not pollution). The idea of drivers
yelling/telling us to get the hell out of there (which happens all the
time) is the height of absurdity.

His comments are worse than the Rutgers women's basketball "nappy-headed hos" quip by the complete idiot Don Imus. He looks the idiot in that silly 10 gallon hat and slicker. He was suspended, but should have been fired in my opinion.

We were at a dead stop in the heavy snow on I-95 south and it sounded like 20 tractor trailers were riding down the highway against the guardrail. None of us knew what happened until the next morning. Howard Stern called Air Florida and asked how much tickets were from National to the 14th Street Bridge. He was fired. I've not contributed to anything he's done since and will not ever listen or view any of his shows.

I'm a 53 year old former competitive cyclist in the Washington, DC area. My 20-year-old son is a former national points champion, a two-time NCAA National Cycling silver medalist at Colorado State University, and a pro development team racer in the summers. My whole family rides the streets of DC on our bicycles, including my youngest 12 year old. The American Team performance in the 2010 Winter Olympics combined Nordic event was the highlight of the games for me, especially the cross-country skiing finale. I pay money to see cyclists and skiers and I use the products of many advertisers and network sponsors who make TV and radio broadcasts of those events possible.
>
> I just could not believe my ears when I heard Tony's rant on cyclists and cross country skiers. It exposed seething hatred for these innocent athletes and recreationalists, and promoted vicious, life-threatening and felonious acts of violence toward them. How would you feel if some numb-skull actually carried out a Korhneiser suggestion? How do you feel about the rhetoric that resulted in the Palestinian murder of innocent Israeli Olympic athletes in the 1972 summer games? You think I'm exaggerating?
>
> I'm assuming that ESPN is pro-sports and sport-neutral. Just for a second, consider all the money Nike has poured into Lance Armstrong, and CSC into professional US and European cycling. I suggest you show your support for cycling/skiing and terminate Mr. Kornheiser for his anti-cycling/skiing remarks, or lose your sponsors and viewers, while competitors like Versus eat your lunch. Just do it ESPN! Just do it!

Steinberg's correct that Kornheiser's been saying this stuff about
cyclists for years. I distinctly remember making the decision to quit
reading him a few years back when I heard or read one of his "run 'em
off the road" rants. Then ESPN had to go and put him on MNF.
Never thought I'd be saying this--because she's generally awful, and
is a WASHINGTON sportswriter living in NEW YORK--but, where's Sally
Jenkins when you need her? She's got Lance's back, right?!?!?!?
And, on the topic of WaPo sportswriters, could Bos please decide
whether the Nats are a pathetic organization or Kasten truly does have
a plan that the Lerners will pay for?
