A velodrome makes a HUGE difference in cycling culture. It would be
great to have one in DC.
I grew up in Manchester and that velodrome single-handedly caused
Britain's current racing renaissance (now dominating track and
sprint). The scene had been moribund since the '60s, after Tommy
Simpson and Reg Harris - who's statue stands at the velodrome's
entrance.
Reg is the most compelling story in cycling I know, especially for us
old guys. He'd been a world-beater as a youngster and then retired
and stopped biking. In his 50s he had heart problems so his Dr. got
him back on the bike for gentle exercise. Reg got the bug again but
hated the new-fangled bikes. So, he went around shops piecing
together his old bike from old parts in mechanic bins. On that
frankenbike he became national champ again (not for his age-group but
professional!) . . . even breaking his old records in his mid 50s!
But that was also perhaps an indication that UK cycling had regressed
in the previous two decades.

Oddly, my best friend's dad (Harry Hall) was with both Simpson and
Harris when they died. Both or them in the saddle. Simpson's death
on Ventoux is of lore, of course.

Reg was old and blind at the end. Harry used to take him on a tandem
for rides ("Mainly I steer the engine behind me," as he would say).
That was unduly modest because Harry had became world champ for his
age.

Reg's life would make an amazing movie . . . but who would believe
it? Too Hollywood for even Hollywood!

With the tasters you get an hour on the track plus the use of a track bike for 10 pounds, about $16. I'll be home at christmas and going for my 3rd session on the track. It is an absolute blast. in spite of there being about 20 'beginners' on the track, plus maybe a dozen or so riders of other levels of competence, nobody fell off or crashed in the two times I went previously.

Southside Speedway is 3 hours, in the Richmond area, also a bit too far. The latest East Coast efforts at establishing an indoor velodrome are proposed for Chester County, PA. Article here:
