Virtual Tour of the Manchester Velodrome. Notice badminton and
basketball courts set up on infield. I guess even the most expensive
velodromes around the World need to be multi-use facilities. (Adobe
Flash required.)

Manchester Velodrome has regular 'taster' sessions for non-trackies, and a variety of graduated skills sessions leading up to full 'track accreditation'. With the tasters you get an hour on the track plus the use of a track bike for 10 pounds, about $16.  I'll be home at christmas and going for my 3rd session on the track.  It is an absolute blast.  in spite of there being about 20 'beginners' on the track, plus maybe a dozen or so riders of other levels of competence, nobody fell off or crashed in the two times I went previously.

If we had any sort of banked track within an hour's drive of the DC area it would be fantabuloso. At 4 hours Ttown is just too far.  Southside Speedway is 3 hours, in the Richmond area, also a bit too far.  The latest East Coast efforts at establishing an indoor velodrome are proposed for Chester County, PA.  Article here:

2 1/2 - 3 hours away, but it will be a real indoor track.

Stephen, Sports Quest is doing ground breaking on their velodrome mid- December of this year. It will be less than a mile from Southside Speedway, and will also have a Crit and Cyclocross course.

Still not in your backyard, but lucky for me, it will be in MINE!

A velodrome makes a HUGE difference in cycling culture. It would be
great to have one in DC.

I grew up in Manchester and that velodrome single-handedly caused
Britain's current racing renaissance (now dominating track and
sprint). The scene had been moribund since the '60s, after Tommy
Simpson and Reg Harris - who's statue stands at the velodrome's
entrance.

Reg is the most compelling story in cycling I know, especially for us
old guys. He'd been a world-beater as a youngster and then retired
and stopped biking. In his 50s he had heart problems so his Dr. got
him back on the bike for gentle exercise. Reg got the bug again but
hated the new-fangled bikes. So, he went around shops piecing
together his old bike from old parts in mechanic bins. On that
frankenbike he became national champ again (not for his age-group but
professional!) . . . even breaking his old records in his mid 50s!
But that was also perhaps an indication that UK cycling had regressed
in the previous two decades.

Oddly, my best friend's dad (Harry Hall) was with both Simpson and
Harris when they died. Both or them in the saddle. Simpson's death
on Ventoux is of lore, of course.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Simpson

Reg was old and blind at the end. Harry used to take him on a tandem
for rides ("Mainly I steer the engine behind me," as he would say).
That was unduly modest because Harry had became world champ for his
age.

Reg's life would make an amazing movie . . . but who would believe
it? Too Hollywood for even Hollywood!

Wow that is an awesome story. It does not surprise me though about how at 50 he came back to wreck shop. I have seen my dad, with powerlifting, break his own and open records until he stopped at the age of 50. Now he is 54 and just one a body building show (not just his age group but the whole show!

On this note I would just like to add how the regulations in regards to age ratios kills the sport of cycling. That is one thing which should be changed asap.

Ok just for some laughs I have attached a pic of my 54 year old dad (yes they drug test)

Hey that's anoyher thing. At EVERY powerlifting meet they would drug test the top 3 lifters and any record breakers. This sport has way less money than cycling but yet manages to test at every meet and the top 3 not a random selection. If we wanted to clean up the sport why not actually drug test? People say it is to expensive but how does the american powerlifting association afford it. They have way less money. I don't understand.

Anyways adios. Oh yeah, I am going to get a track bike!
