When: Saturday May 18th, 4pm
What: Wolf and Jessi visiting + 5 minute talks

Wolf and Jessi are visiting from Vancouver, CA next weekend. So lets have a meetup! This time it's going to be on Saturday (not Sunday like usual) at 4pm.

Wolf organizes the LW group in Vancouver and does an amazing job.

Lets do 5 minute talks once again; they turned out really really well last time. They don't have to be something you're an expert at, just something you're interested in you and know a bit about.

Last time there were talks on vitamins, kink, mass incarceration, Uruguayan food, language evolution, deliberate practice, exercise, soccer leagues and micromorts

Last time the talks were amazing, but there were many, so this time I think we'll do just 4. I'm not sure how we should pick the talks, but I want to try not to discourage people who are shy about presenting.

If you would like to do a 5 minute talk, let me know. If want to present something but feel a little shy about it, let me know anyway! Don't worry if we already have talks for next, we'll definitely be doing this again, and its useful to know who is interested.

I visited Wolf and Jessi a few months ago and can vouch that they are both awesome, so this should be extra fun.

Shame, I'm out of town. I keep meaning to attend one of these.

I should be able to make it. And I'm pretty sure I can fill five minutes talking about my self-replicating semi-autonomous sustainable infrastructure for post-scarcity project, or, I guess, SSSIFPP, which has bloomed into kind of a big deal in the last week.

Hey All,

Brian brought up that making a certain number of talks "approved" will probably tend to discourage the shyer people, so we won't be doing that. If you have a talk you're welcome to give it; no need for approval. Its nice if you announce if you're planning on giving a talk though, to excite people.

Looking forward to this! Last time was awesome.

If you guys wouldn't mind a fresh face around, I am traveling home to north of Seattle, and I may be able to arrange arriving in Seattle shortly around 3:30PM, to get myself reacquainted with the area. I don't have a set arrival time to get home, so I'm flexible on whenever the ending time is. I don't have anything to present, but I'd be glad to learn about subjects outside of my normal purview.

If I find that I definitely can't make it I'll post back here at around noon on Saturday.

I think I can make this one. I don't really have a talk, but if you guys are running low on them, let me know and I can probably make one up.

Here's the talks I know about so far:

 * SSSIFPP - Spencer
 * Thorium power - Brian
 * High Intensity Interval Training - John

Last time we had several people who gave a talk but hadn't mentioned it on the list.

I'm going to hitchhike on Sam's question with this "ditto" since I'm in the same boat

I'll definitely be able to make it, I'm about 140 miles away at the time of this writing, but that means I'll be arriving early. Will I be able to park nearby while I wander for a bit before 4?

Absolutely! You can give me a call if you want to hang out at the house beforehand or put your stuff there. 360 602 1069

Hey, that was great!

We had a a bunch of great talks, and met a number of newcomers, Bryce and Quinn, and second timers Jonathan and Jacob.

The talks were:
  • Beeminder
  • Intelligence Explosion and the Sufficiently Advanced Compiler
  • Origami Design
  • Thorium Power
  • High intensity interval training (watch the inspiration video http://infoproc.blogspot.com/2013/05/exercise-response.html)
  • Self-replicating semi-autonomous sustainable infrastructure for post-scarcity project
Post any additional information about your talk if you have it!

Afterwards we had some delicious Indian food and talked about pharmaceuticals, set theory, patents, mentoring, storytelling and more.

It was lots of fun!

See you next time!

Hey guys - I've never come to one of these but I'd really like to. Though, I live downtown and don't have a car. Are they always out of the city / at someone's house? I would have imagined this was a sort of cafe-like gathering. Either way, do another one so I can come :)

And if you do plan one soon, I'm more likely to attend Friday or Saturday meetups than Sundays.
And hi Alex.

Hi Alex! We'd love to have you. They're usually at my house which is a good space for these. In the past we've had them at cafes and other people's houses too.

The 66, 72, 73 and a few other buses go very close to my house.

I think we will probably have another one again soon. You should definitely come! I think 'be specific' might be a good topic.

Good to know Jonathan. That helps for planning.

Look forward to meeting you Alex!
