The traffic signal was taken down after it's mounting screw slipped down a bit.  This signal is mounted infront of the store and someone was under it when is dropped a bit.  Better moiunting method and placement are needed.

It is now on one of the tables.  Don't rehang it unless you find a better mounting solution than a screw with an eye head.  Also, a better location is needed.

Thanks!  I'll come take care of it soon; probably Saturday.  I brought it down for the DerbyCon party and it was popular enough several people asked me to leave it.  I've created the wiki page for it but haven't been able to print the QR code to apply yet.  Location and mounting suggestions are VERY welcome or, if preferred, I'll take it back home.  Let me know what you all think.

I think it is awesome... Very much in keeping with the hacker space decor.
I kinda like it where it is, and due to the size of the thing, can't think of a better place.

The original placement of the light was removing functionality from the space (access to store and whiteboard) while being hung unsafely. It simply cannot stay where it was. One possibility would be to hang it above the stairs to the basement. Though, I imagine this would possibly make it inconvenient to move heavy objects in and out of the basement. Other than that, there really is no space in the main room to hang it. It's too big.

That is an interesting idea… (Not sure if it would hang down “too far” making you need to duck under it on the way down…)

Although, your email DOES introduce an interesting alternative…

“…Other than that, there really is no space in the main room to hang it…”

I do not know how it could be done, but could it somehow be hung it in the middle of the Ball room……. ?

(Getting it up there, and securely so, would be an interesting challenge)

“Hang The Light” Hackathon perhaps????

It's possible to mount it horizontally with some modifications if people think that's a good idea.  Maybe a strap around the base or something.

Additionally the power cord can be replaced with something longer with relative ease.

I hadn't really intended to leave it but it seems popular (I can totally understand why!).

What about placing it in the corner by the garage door by the donation shelves?  Not a lot gets stored over there because of the way the floor drops.

Above the basement stairs would be my suggestion.  Perhaps tie it in to the motion sensor so it lets people know if someone is down there.

Where the trashcans used to be?

That seems like a good place for it…

About mounting… how Heavy is the thing?

By the way, WHERE on earth did you get it? (If it came from, say…“Bardstown Road”, I withdraw the question)

It's not too heavy but it's not exactly light, either.  I haven't weighed it so I can't give a figure.  I'd guess 10 pounds or so?  Just a blind guess.

It was taken from the trash by a friend of mine who asked that I make it work for him.  They were going to use it as a night-light at the business but have never bothered to pick a place to mount it and run a wire.  I expect they'll *eventually* get around to doing this someday but they're not in any kind of hurry.  This is why it's on loan with a "do not hack" notice on the wiki; it may need to be returned eventually.

If you examine the unit you will note the damage it took before it was discarded by the city; there's a large hole in the side of the housing.  I've not bothered to patch the hole as it's use now is strictly indoors and it's not structurally dangerous.  Given that it was essentially rescued from a trash-heap (without trespassing or any other illegal act) I believe it to be entirely legal -- I wouldn't have brought it to the space (or my house) if I felt it'd get me or anyone else into any trouble.  It's is assuredly NOT stolen.

10 LBS?  No way.  Did you miss a zero?

It's not 100 lbs. I held it without strain. It's roughly 10-20 lbs. Also, last I saw, the trashcan currently occupies that corner Aaron's talking about. The trashcan should probably be moved next to the recycling can like it used to be in order to get it out of the space a little easier. The keg should be moved near kitchen stuff to keep all food related items together.

I think the traffic light should convey keg level information....

What a stunningly good idea J

(Hmmm… how do we know?... have a device that periodically raps on the keg, and interprets the echo pitch to deduce volume?

We’d probably need a lot of experimental data points, huh……)

A large digital scale with the empty kegerator (plus empty keg) tared to zero might suffice.

I wonder if when it slipped it went to yellow?

Just put a regular sight glass level column indicator on it with a few photoresistors stuck to the side of the column glass with the luquid partially blocking the light; each photoresistor that gets X threshhold of light shows the level. If you just wanted Red/Yellow/Green you'd only need 3. If you want to lightproof it just wrap the whole shebang in tape or if you still want the visible sight glass for human eyes, use a spec ific frequency LED and matching photoresistors that don't change levels much in our space (keep our of direct sunlight).

Actually, if someone has a way of measuring it, rather than the traffic light (or maybe in conjunction with it) I have a brand new fuel guage someone can integrate into it.  Its essentially a current sensing device.   You would need to drive current through it to set the guage level.

Mount it on the roof on a big pole and tie it into Mother to indicate whether the space is open to the public.

It's no longer weather proof; hence it was discarded.
