Found this while browsing for ways to install home surveillance without actually buying internet. Really cool for a lot of projects.

eh, there's a single Wimax tower downtown... :) Never worked for me though.

From Wikipedia:
In November 2012, FreedomPop began providing free and paid Internet services in the United States through wholesale Internet carrier Clearwire. The service is in beta. Eventually FreedomPop intends to offer all Americans free Internet after it switches to Sprint 3G/4G/LTE service in 2013.[5]FreedomPop ended the partnership with LightSquared as a result of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulatory issues, and instead decided to partner with Clearwire.[6] FreedomPop expanded its network partnerships in July by signing Sprint and gaining access to its LTEnetwork.

I wonder why they aren't in Louisville considering they're in some of our neighboring cities...

It'll be interesting to see what happens with that Sprint deal.

I emailed freedom pop.

"Gerrit,

Thank you for your e-mail.

We understand why you might be hesitant to purchase a device with uncertain coverage availability. Some users are able to successfully find coverage even when our map says there is no coverage in an area, so I would recommend giving it a try. If you order now and find that you don't have coverage, you may be eligible for a hassle-free device upgrade at no additional cost to you when we integrate into the nationwide Sprint network in just a couple of months. This will allow you to try us out and become familiar with our service before we upgrade in just a few months - it's a great deal! You are guaranteed to receive the best service available. Let us know what you decide.

Check our coverage map at https://www.freedompop.com/coverage_map.htm to see a detailed map of our available coverage.

We have plans over the next couple of months to expand our coverage area so please stay tuned.

Well,

I have sprint and we haven't had any type of 4G yet in Louisville as far as I know.  It has been "coming" for several years now. Now that they switched from Wi-Max, it seems Sprint users in Louisville may have to start the wait all over again.

Sometime in 2013, hopefully... we're in the third group of cities I believe.

Joe-

Which "Sprint 4G" though? They've essentially abandoned their WiMax deployment in favor of an LTE deployment. Unfortunately they brand both services "4G" (...must resist going into my %dG rant...)

I believe Bluegrass.net turned up a WiMax POP downtown a few years ago, but if I recall correctly, it is optimized for stationary point to point links rather than mobile use.
