I was thinking about running a EL wire workshop mid october - so you can make your tron costumes.  Any interest?  Something like this...http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2012/08/07/how-to-run-an-el-wire-classworkshop-backtoschool/

I'd be interested in that...  I'm curious about using the stuff in clothing and car interior applications.

I'm always interested in cool things that glow.

I think this is where the Jeri Ellsworth reference goes.

Would you be able to demonstrate how effective it is in use for
lightsaber props?
That's one of several saber blade types and I've got a project I'm
trying to decide
on if I should go LED chain or EL wire at this point.

For the most part elwire is either on or off.  There are sound activated el modules that let your wire beat to the music but that is about it.  I would probably go with leds if I were building a light sabre because I could make the on and off effect of the beam growing.  Plus it would be cool to make a multicolored beam light saber with rgb leds.  Look at this..  http://adafruit.com/products/306

I agree re: LEDs in terms of color chaning and individual stages of length type control. That said, EL wire is easily dimmable, so you do have some options. You could use multiple pieces of EL wire much as you'd use multiple series of LEDs in terms of changing the length, but EL wire doesn't color shift like an RGB LED. EL wire does have a pretty good 'glow' to it that I just never feel like LEDs really match, tho.

That's certainly a factor (the scrolling effect) for my build.

In case y'all are interested, here's a led vs. EL comparison.

..and the "any color" saber has been done already too.

If I were you, I would just go ahead and start building one, led or el wire.  build it you must!

Working on that... been amassing information.

Probably looking at a makototsai blade or DIY with chain LEDs.
2 watt speaker, and li-ion battery pack.

Still have to figure out which soundboard, and what to do about the
buttons, blade screw, and
kill switch. Past that wiring and sound fonts will be a piece of cake.

Anyway, back to EL stuff... didn't mean to derail.

Well I think by the comments... if I have it, they will come.  So I need to pick a date and schedule.  Should be fun.
