So team rocket is researching the fabrication of a pulse jet. To do this requires us to place a fap request for a sheet metal: break, shear, and roller. I have looked on harbor freight and put some thought and we have decided to pass this on as an open thread to see what you guys think. Here is the unit we are currently looking at http://www.harborfreight.com/30-inch-shear-press-brake-and-slip-roll-5907.html.

Send out the Hounds.

When you open the fap, you may want to open two threads, one for the FAP vote and one for the FAP discussion.  :-)

Couple Questions

1.       Roll Dia 1.5”… is that the largest dia, the smallest dia, or the size of the rollers, and you can rull any size you need

2.       20 Ga mild steel is max capacity… I thought you said you wanted Stainless Steel capacity

3.       I DO like the fact that this machine actually includes tooling… Nice!

4.       Is there a thread/discussion group on rocketry yet? (Am a wee bit concerned that you are discussing a metal rocket, but don’t want to clutter this thread[See, learning])

I really like the magnabend:

Would be nice to have in addition so something like the harborfreight
tool suggested

I feel you on the magnabend. This is the issue I had when researching all of this. Yes it makes since to buy each individual tool. One slip roll, one break and one shear. The issue is cost. If we where to buy each individual piece of equipment it would significantly increase the cost of this potential fap request while minimizing the total dimension of material that we can work with.

The real reason I am posting this thread is to see if anyone has any of these equipment that they will donate? If not does anyone know of a better all in one machine with better customer reviews? Or Does anyone have any experience doing sheet metal work and can kick down their opinion before I submit a formal fap?

I will continue researching and try to figure out the answers to the questions posted.

My friend Robb does tons of sheet-metal work; I'll see if I can get his input for this conversation.

My main concern with this is the shear. I will ask around with some Tool & Die makers I know. about the shear capacity for stainless steel that is equivalent to 20 gauge mild steel. Machining (i.e. milling and drilling stainless is a pain in the patootie) it can be done but only at small increments and with plenty of cooling. That said shearing is a totally different animal. I assume the 20 gauge capacity is more in line with the shearing then the bending.

I talked to Robb and his experience is primarily in Aluminum and hand-breaks; he's not really an expert on steel-breaks.  He said he'd be willing to help us look at tools and lend what advice he can be he needs to know more about what is trying to be made with it; specifically I think he's after the gauge of metal you're wanting to work with.  Heavier gauges will require a hydraulic or pneumatic unit and can't be done by hand.

Just an update on this thread. I talked with my metal scrapper. He connected me to a guy who has 30 years experience in the sheet metal industry. I will talk with him tomorrow. Based off of Johns experience we might need to purchase more industrial equipment. Which means price of fap goes up and having to clean up a section of the undead zone for more tools. :)

from my research there is about a 4 gauge difference between mild steel and stainless steel. that means the one that was considered would handle 24 gauge stainless steel. that comes out to about .0239 inch thick for stainless steel. making it very difficult to weld.
