Personal Mugs for the Hackerspace

Steph and I have been kicking around the idea of getting customized mugs for LVL1 members and hanging them above the kitchen sink.

Benefits:

You always have something to drink from

Everyone is responsible for cleaning their own cup

Cuts down on garbage and consumables

Gives a good visual representation of our current membership

A tangible benefit of becoming a member!

The cups:

After looking around we decided ceramic would be best since you can easily permanently customize them with paint pens.  Below are two different styles we were looking at:

We would probably order 50 with a LVL1 logo on them and then each member would be left to write their own names and/or decorations on it with the paint pens.  50 mugs will run around $250 and should last us a while.

Brian needs to start a youtube stream called "will it laser". Just not our laser cutter as I don't want to find out when something should not have been lasered.

That is a brilliant idea Joe.  Maybe get him an equivalent laser to test with?  Build a rig where the laser energy is directed in from outside a safety-chamber so damage done is contained and we don't risk the laser or any injuries.

I did not mean to side track this thread.  So to take a small step back to it I would rather have glass but it has been pointed out that it would be harder to customize.

One of my favorite mugs of all time were found at a restaurant near my college campus.

On one side there was a chemical symbol of caffeine. On the other side, "This mug was stolen from Cafe Classico."

I procrastinated stealing one, and sadly, the restaurant closed recently. But! Now I can have an even cooler "This mug was stolen from LVL1" mug.

I do like the look of the glass ones better, but I can't think of a good way to customize them.  If anyone has any ideas let me know, I'd rather go with glass if we can.

Etching paste would be one option for glass mug customization.

Etching glass is super easy.  The laser cutter could be used to make stencils.

Yes brad our youtube account is lvl1hackerspace.  Very few videos on it I assume because everyone hates lvl1 and refuses to make nice things.  Not because no one knows about it.

you can laser some stencils then use "Armour Etch"    ,  it works pretty good !

Glass does laser... I have tried it.  No video.

I think we may be able to laser glass mugs that have the flat sides but it would be hard on round one.   I guess size would come into play also.

My issue with glass etching is the amount of work it will take to do 40 mugs.  I don't see many members taking it upon themselves to etch a glass; with cremaic and paint pens getting them customized is only a matter of handing each member a mug and some markers.  Plus, if someone wants to make theirs easier to find they can decorated it as much as they want or just write their name on the bottom if they're cool with leaving it stock.

I've looked into etching glass but I don't think we can etch a round glass.  As soon as the laser moves it's going to get so out of focus that it'll no longer etch except for a very small area. We'll either need an eggbot laser cutter hybrid or square mugs.

Hackers get busy. Convert the laser to run only on the Y-axis and turn the mug.. that way the x-axis is by the mug tuirning!

we will probably need a bigger dishwasher. Anyone know if they make mugs/glasses that look like solo cups i can only find the wineglass version

There’s only 2 problems…

1.       Our laser printer would not be able to handle the project, both because the bed is not deep enough to allow a mug to sit low enough to focus, and even if it did, the curve introduces a variable focal point issue.

2.       Even with the correct bulb, the interior light is inop. Need to wait for an LED strip to “see” what’s going on in the box
