I strongly approve this idea...
Had my own mug for years in the Navy (Thou Shalt NOT get between a Naval Engineer and his Coffee Mug)
There seems to be 2 discussions (OK, 3) in this thread...
1. Coffee Mug (Probably should be stoneware... and <=16 oz. Glass dissipates heat, among other ways, into the handle. A really hot cup of coffee can become too hot to hold (especially the all-important... second cup))
2. Beer Mug (Probably should be Glass... and >=16oz.)
3. Lasering the above. Since Sticking a mug in the machine would be... problematic... We could go with an outside firm... (But... We're a HACKERSPACE)
So, how about some kind of label plate thing, that will bond to your mug(s) ?

Etching paste would be one option for glass mug customization.

I do like the look of the glass ones better, but I can't think of a good way to customize them. If anyone has any ideas let me know, I'd rather go with glass if we can.

I think its an awesome idea. I will go with whatever the group wants, but
I'm sort of partial to beer mugs or steins. There's more room for
stickers, though they do take up more hang space.
It might be a good membership benefit that you get a mug with your
membership, like the wort hogs do at BBC. We have the funds to cover it,
and by buying a large stock (for each member plus room for growth) the
price drops.

I happen to have access to a laser with a revolver fixture for glasses, etc..... have never used the fixture... don't yet know the max diameter. Looks like a mug with a handle could be problematic if the etch wraps too far around the mug.
I would be willing to laze a sample if someone wants to do an image and picks up a cheap sample at the dollar store.
Since the laser is not mine, I can't offer to do 50+ mugs, but will gladly do a sample for consideration.

Already looked into CafePress, they don't have the selection we need and the price is substantially higher.
I went ahead and ordered a few sample glasses. There have been lots of good suggestions for customizing individual glasses, but since we still don't have an easy way to mass customize them ceramic is still in the lead. I believe ceramic can also be lasered so that still an option. After the sample glasses get here I plan on going ahead and making a fap for an order of 50.

Perhaps it would be better to etch a piece of metal that gets glued to the
mug. Assuming there is some metal that can be etched easily which most
metals don't.
