That's not good. Last time it broke, the communications card was the culprit. Sounds like a motor driver blew this time. I don't believe there is any warranty left on the cutter...

The motor driver is spectacularly blown.  In fact, all identifying marks have been destroyed.  I strong suspect that the driver chip is the DRV8821 from Texas Instruments, however.  Based on the board layout, this is the only possibility I can see.  If the board is really and truly out of warranty, we can give replacement a shot.  I'll defer to someone else, however, to actually contact full spectrum laser.

The motor driver board is now sitting inside of the laser cutter.  I marked all cables as I removed them.

I am out of town at the moment, but I do have a few drv8821s in my toolbox. I will take a look when I get back.

That's an oddly specific part to have around.  When will you be back in town?

Oddly specific is right... Don't have that one on hand here. Too bad it's not a TIP125 or a LM358.

I would be wondering about collateral damage that frequently accompanies a spectacular failure like this. The power-supply rails that power this chip would typically experience surge currents that are unhealthy for rectifiers, pcb traces and such. The windings on the motor that it drives would bear a critical look as well before attempting a smoke test. And if there are commutating diodes external to the driver device, they bear checking, too.

I will be back in town on New Year's Day. I got a couple drv8821 samples a year ago for the project that was in my brain at that moment. I have no idea what that project was.

I am calling full spectrum today to get a replacement board.
