Alright so I had a question that I figured someone out there would have an opinion on. It kinda parlays with global warming but really its the NASA theory of pole shifts. I've read some stuff, Watch the forsaken you tube videos even did a little journal article fact finding. I even came to terms with the conspiracy theory that NASA won't talk or release details about anything related to said pole shifting. So whats the real deal?

More failed doomsday nonsense is the short version.  The slightly longer version can be found here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_shift_hypothesis  The scientific data doesn't back the earlier speculation.

No shortage of disaster/end times speculation in human mythology and storytelling; it's a popular dynamic/trope.

There is a related topic of interest: geomagnetic pole reversal (data shows this does happen).  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_reversal  Data on how this might impact human life is at the bottom of the article.

Don't worry Josh, if Joe Tim or I feel the earth doing anything weird we'll let you know.

So a guy responded to my facebook about this. Essentially the key issue is oxygen demand. If the atmosphere gets less then 3 percent oxygen then essentially all life on the planet will be doomed. Wheres Dan when I need a break down of the atmospheric composition. Last time I checked Aaron, Joe, and Tim always thought the earth was weird.

Yay! we are good for awhile. 20 percent oxygen also the soon to be value of american currency! ::does the skippy dance::

I've often wondered if life can exist on other planets that have a methane atmosphere, where they need methane to breathe.  Oxygen on their planet would be considered fuel.

Josh,
This whole thread is dumb and you should feel dumb. OSHA describes a dangerously low oxygen level as 19.5%, by the way.

Well it is certainly confusing.  I feel like there are a bunch of missing messages in this thread that I'm not seeing, or something.  OP started out implying a relationship between pole reversals and climate change, and then somehow this moved on to oxygen somehow vanishing from the atmosphere.  Shall we move on to the relationship between the pitch of buzzing mosquitoes, the daily value of bitcoin, and the shape of tail fins on 1956 Chevrolets?

Huh.. Why should I feel dumb for asking a question? Now that's just stupid. I'm interested in the electro magnetic forces and the implied effects. If the world did end how it would happen and sometimes I like to day dream about space ship earth freezing in time. Would it be dumber to not question and generate conclusions or worse become a sheep?

I haven't been paying attention to the thread but in case it hasn't been mentioned and you haven't heard it, Science Friday on NPR discussed pole shifts in the relatively recent past.

I'm with Josh on this one; it's fine to ask questions!  In fact it seems rather "not being excellent to each other" to suggest otherwise.  I'm sure I ask some dumb questions about EE stuff from time to time (feel free to ask Brad about that; I usually bug him).  One of the beautiful things about our community is that it fosters a sense of wonder and inquiry and allows us to learn from and teach each other.  I'd like to encourage that and, frankly, discourage anyone who's standing in they way of that.
