These folks reached out to us on twitter. They are looking for people to host meet-ups and I thought someone from LVL1 might be interested in taking up the offer.

"Spectral Challenge is a call to makers, hackers, and Do-It-Yourselfers worldwide to tackle real-world environmental problems with low-cost, open source spectrometry.

What if there were an affordable device you could build yourself, take into your neighborhood and use to test for heavy metals, oil contamination, or other toxics, without needing to have a PhD or access to a lab?"

Wow... this might be *exactly* what folks living in rubbertown need. There are plenty of environmental regulations against the types of pollutants released in that area, the problem is proving that a release occurred... if an EPA inspector arrives two days after the fact, most of the airbourne pollutants are long gone. Providing fast cheap iron clad proof of pollution would be huge.

This looks like a really interesting and potentially a device to make real social impacts, as previously mentioned.

These spectrometers do not work for gases unfortunately.

Didn't know if you guys knew about this. We use it a lot in the lab.

Essentially its the spectra-graph for almost every known element plus goodies. It replaces a whole section of the library.
