In case you haven't already seen this, check out this really neat demonstration involving sound and water.  Awesome project, but it wouldn't really work for a live demonstration, unless you had a monitor in front as the viewing platform.

Are there any BC548 (or similar) NPN transistors and IRF510 MOSFETs in the
donation boxes? Or would anyone know where I could get some in this city,
since Radio Shack no longer really caries common electronic parts these
days?

I'm trying to build something like this...

http://www.m0ukd.com/Touch_CW_Paddle_Key/

The one near the bottom with the 9volt battery. I'm thinking of putting
it into a short peice of pvc pipe, and then adding conductive pads. One
for my left hand to hold, that would have the +9v; two on the end on
opposing sides for the dit and dah. In this way I could hold the "key" in
my left hand and key with my right, whether I'm walking along a hiking
trail with a small fixed frequency 70 cm transceiver in my pack, or laying
on my back in a hammock.

Actually, Radio Shack still carries the IRF510 in stores since they're so general purpose.  As for the BC548, they also carry the 2n3904, which is basically a drop-in equivalent.  On their site, you can find the closest store that has it in stock.  Or, if you want, I could bring a few 2n3904s with me to the meeting.

I can't go to meetings, since I work second shift Mon-Sat. Thanks for the
info, though!

I've been buying NPN transistors at Radio Shack over on Cane Run (Greenbelt Hwy) in a pinch (cheaper to order online typically).
I saw a mosfet there as well the other day.  They never stock more than 2 or 3 of any one part though... So if you need very many you either have to order or buy em out and wait for fresh delivery.
DigiKey ships very fast and cheap.  My last order I sent in at 7:45 pm and had a shipping notification by 8:15pm.  Parts arrived 2 days later via USPS.
Good luck!

How about a simple strobe light?
